08/7/2024 09:44 | Nice rise today, Labour are mumbling the right things with RR giving a speech at some point today.Could be Project Fear in the blue rags is being blown out the water.Good sounds on Europe too, that was never a completed task, and with France and Germany's economies full of cold it may be an easier task to cosy up but not cuddle. | ![]() rongetsrich
08/7/2024 06:39 | Lauders, your post was nearly as bad as those caddish ones, save to say you recovered well at the end. I reckon CW1 will ban them all if they don’t stop talking when there’s nothin Phoenix related. As for the LTA, RR has said they will leave it alone, so my guess is the relief rate. | ![]() topbun
08/7/2024 02:41 | A bit from Andy Briggs. Thanks for the link Skinny. Why anyone would give you a thumbs down on the PHNX BB for a link to a PHNX related article is beyond me! What a strange and sad world we live in these days. I'm so old that I remember the days when people, occasionally, chatted about Phoenix(it's a company quoted on the stock market)on this thread. Only when there was something worth saying, obviously 😉 Quite so CWA1. Here is a piece on the pensions industry now Labour are in office. PHNX related of course: | ![]() lauders
07/7/2024 22:09 | yump i think you are a younger person but all newspapers today have been taken over to apply to modern tastes,i remember when the express was one of the best papers in the country and beaverbrook who ran it was one of the most important leaders who with his knowledge increased spitfire war plane production. can you imagine that happening today ????? | ![]() lippy4
07/7/2024 19:36 | Not for you anyway, but if you look beyond your nose, you’ll see the implications for the elements of journalism that are good, accurate, independent and well researched, even if you happen not to agree with them. The alternative is a multitude of news outlets with no history, written by anyone with little or no training, who knows how to use the internet to their advantage. The news appearing is being dictated by popularity and clicks. | ![]() yump
07/7/2024 14:32 | Ronge 4645. A lot to agree with there though its not just the Telegraph its all of em. Political pamphlets rather than newspapers. 50 years ago they were all solid reads with a political slant. A shame because the best bits of the Telegraph and Guardian are still very good reads but far too much space is given to freelance political windbags and bigots who have to write something to eat so offer their opinions on everything and anything day after day and slagging off everything the other side does whether it has merit or not. IMO they have lost much of their credibility as reliable reporters of events. I find myself having to read both to get a reasonably accurate end of the stick | ![]() scruff1

07/7/2024 13:54 | That is quite a hit list, an easy target to go for, they will not wait long to get this in place will they.. Reversal of the LTA ceiling Lower the contributions max from GBP60K End tiered tax relief on contributions Add the 25% draw down to taxable income and tip it all into 40/45% income tax How long before the 1st budget..? | laurence llewelyn binliner
07/7/2024 13:30 | Starmer went on record last week that he was not going to withdraw the lump sum. He made an error in saying that it would eventually fade out in its time line.Labour HQ said that was an error and there is no plan.I got rid of my Telegraph subscription last week because of the nonsense you are reading, it's nothing more than project fear version whatever. He's on record what he's not going to do, the bit he's silent on is what he's going to do.I did take a nice chunk of my 25 % out, it's filled 3 ISAs and left a chunk in a non tax paying family member's GIA. I'm hedged I guess, but Labour are not making the sounds to make me panic, I think they have growth, interest rates and inflation going for them. | ![]() rongetsrich
07/7/2024 13:19 | Thanks Skinny. | ![]() mcunliffe1
07/7/2024 12:15 | One reason pete that I and perhaps others don't wish to take the 25% tax free lump sum is the lack of knowing what else to do with it. I have about £51k that I could take now from my pension pot. I could then put £20k into my ISA - a stocks and shares ISA. But, the other £30k would need to go into either investments or a cash savings account. Let's say the £30k earns 4%. The £1,200 would in part then be taxed until I can place the next £20k into the ISA. A withdrawal of the 25% to pay off a mortgage would make sense - but I paid offmine some years back. The cash I have in my ii SIPP pays me about £260 a month tax free. | ![]() mcunliffe1

07/7/2024 12:10 | Politicians excel at meddling with pensions, and the tax free lump sum and iht exemptions are prime targets to be reduced or removed. Why on earth would someone not want to lock in the 25% tax free amount as soon as they are able, rather than play Russian roulette with politicians and hmrc? | ![]() pete160 |
