07/7/2024 12:07 | Link to Mail Online article: I doubt it was a case of the Mail talking down the UK Net, more a warning about what may befall pensions. It reminds us of the tax raid in 1997 by New Labour. | ![]() mcunliffe1
07/7/2024 11:59 | Weird. Why is the Daily Mail trying to talk the UK down? Sounds pretty weird. I can understand this sort of article during an election but after? It is pretty weird. | netcurtains
07/7/2024 11:16 | I'm so old that I remember the days when people, occasionally, chatted about Phoenix(it's a company quoted on the stock market)on this thread. Only when there was something worth saying, obviously 😉 | ![]() cwa1
07/7/2024 10:54 | LOL - as I thought, most people are not prepared to do anything about migration if it causes them any inconvenience. Migration is just a ploy to beat the left wing over the head but no one really cares two hoots enough to pay any money out of their own pocket to fix it. 😀 | netcurtains
07/7/2024 10:54 | local flights into europe are much too cheap as the airlines fight for custom so this opens up a huge possible increase for taxation on these cheap fares.. long distance flight taxes on business have been put up a lot in recent years.. | ![]() lippy4
07/7/2024 10:38 | Thanks Skinny. #4632 link is a good read. I hope he is correct and we (UK) can steal a march on Europe and the US given their political upheavels in the very near and medium near future. | ![]() mcunliffe1
07/7/2024 10:27 | Ron: last night your post caught me off guard. I made a flippant response based, to be fair, on experience. You are quite right by the way, short haul I am familiar with. But it's long haul that I prefer and what I am referencing with my flights in August. MAN - MCO with Aer Lingus. We found that it was considerably cheaper with Aer Lingus than Virgin - this year. A quick research online shows me here: that A Carrier Imposed Fee when flying to North America from Manchester and Ireland: Economy fares Each-way fee per passenger Ireland to North America EUR 137.50 Manchester direct to North America / Caribbean GBP 85 It's higher in Business Class. There was a point a year or two back where it was popular to fly to Shannon from the UK, immigrate there for the USA arrival (smaller queues) then fly onward to USA. But £117 (using 1.17 euro to the pound) compared to £85 x 2 (return) times six passengers in our group makes for a big saving; £384 approx. I found that Qatar offered a Bus. class price considerably lower than Emirates for a trip the wife and I made to Sydney in April 2023. I suspect they were heavily subsidising their fares to attract customer. It worked. Taxes however form the greatest part of medium/long haul economy flight prices. Unsure what point you are trying to make Ron re China, India, Vietnam etc. | ![]() mcunliffe1

07/7/2024 10:07 | netcurtains You might like taking your holidays in cold wet Britain and cycle everywhere but most of us like to drive & fly so why should we subsidise your life style. | ![]() redhill
07/7/2024 08:41 | Ah yes, an informed post, but absolutely missing the bit about China, India, Vietnam et al, and now Russia. Fiddling whilst Rome burns. | ![]() rongetsrich
07/7/2024 08:15 | A) If you want to cut migration to the UK (the biggest wish of the right) the easiest way by miles is to make it more expensive to come. There is a direct relationship between PRICE,SUPPLY and DEMAND (its basic economics). If you make coming to the UK more expensive (increase landing fees and fuel) and stop building extra runways and terminals less people will come. Its not rocket science. 99% of migrants fly here (some even commute if European). B) If you want to cut CO2 emissions (The biggest wish of the left) the easiest way by miles is to make it more expensive to fly. There is a direct relationship between PRICE,SUPPLY and DEMAND (its basic economics). If you make flying to the UK more expensive (increase landing fees and fuel) and stop building extra runways and terminals less people will fly. Its not rocket science. The UK had 32M "tourists" last year and that is expected to rise to 39M this year. That is a lot of AirB&B, NHS beds, traffic congestion the lot... re: PETROL: The second point is most important. Petrol tax has not risen for YEARS (literally)yet our trains , buses are short of cash even after price rises. Tax the car and use the money to make buses better (and better routes). T There is little money in the country and thus if we want things to be better we probably will need to shuffle it around somewhat.... And to tax incoming tourists .... Petrol has escaped too long... | netcurtains
07/7/2024 07:23 | Mc, why is a flight from Dublin to Mickey Mouse’s house cheaper than London to MM? Now, obviously you’ll say it’s a shorter distance, but let’s look a little deeper, the flight from Dublin starts off as a Dublin to London route… see where this is going now? So, conduct at least a little research, then report your findings by 1500. All, if you fly long haul, and you have the time, ensure your flight originates outside of the UK, top tip. Other countries are not so daft with tax, short haul is perhaps where Mc’s experience is, and he’s spot on. I thoroughly recommend a night out in Dublin or Leiden before you start your holibobs. As for a private flight, why would I? 🫡😂 | ![]() rongetsrich
06/7/2024 22:28 | Eh? Indeed. However, raising flight prices is understandable as flying (generally) is not essential. Petrol? No. I found if a tad difficult taking a desktop computer to customers in Aberdeen one day and Somerset the next on a bus. A car was far easier. Ron, before you got rich did you ever check the tax on an economy flight to, say, Florida? Ever looked into tax rates for private flights? Have a little think, get back to us 🤣 | ![]() mcunliffe1
06/7/2024 18:19 | What a plonker you are Netty. Price flights out then the money goes to Ireland, it’s called behavioural change. Imagine business flights to the continent get significantly cheaper, where is business going??? I suggest you have a little think and get back to us all! lol, you tickle us all with every post you make! | ![]() rongetsrich

06/7/2024 10:46 | My LABOUR tax wish list I would like LABOUR to increase the price of FLYING, PETROL and ULEZ charges - provided all the extra money raised goes directly into trains, buses, bikes and pedestrian travel. | netcurtains

06/7/2024 09:14 | From what I understand the LibDems, Conservatives and Labour have all said that the economy is due to get worse in the Autumn (that is probably why Rishi called the election now - it was actually the BEST time).... So no doubt the BLAME for the autumn downturn is going to be put on Labour and Labour will have to try their best to explain its not. If Starmer gets past the autumn then things should start to get better..... | netcurtains
05/7/2024 22:43 | I read somewhere a few weeks back that the initial labour 'budget' is going to be in September, and also that, thereafter, they are intending going back to only having 1 budget per year. What it didn't say in the article was, if they have their initial budget in September, when any measures would take effect (ie. Immediately, November, April 6th, etc)Plus, they could change their mind of course, now they have the keys?! | ![]() pete160
05/7/2024 15:30 | November 2024 for the autumn statement, but will we see an earlier budget from the new Gov..? All eyes on the coming fiscal policies as their real intentions become transparent and the mask comes off..? Pension contributions tax relief..? 20% for all..? CGT raid ..? Lifetime allowance reversal tax raid..? ISA cap tax raid..? | laurence llewelyn binliner
05/7/2024 15:09 | well the writing was on the wall weeks ago and Sunak has played a disaster hand. They can only blame themselves for all the chaos in the last 4 yrs. I am no Labour voter, but can only wait and see what actual policies will be put on the table. Seems clear they will do something on tax relief for those hard working and diligent enough to save for future and retirement..... That seems now a conflict with the Labour view on what the rich and middle class definition is....... investing , pensions, savings are not for the rich by definition..... they were and are middle class aspirations for me and many in last 40+ years..
