The Arlit Uranium Mine supplies the raw material for much of France’s nuclear power generation. France generates 75% of its electricity from nuclear, yet usage across the rest of the world has been falling over the last 20 years. Nuclear power generation produces zero carbon emissions and provides highly efficient and reliable energy to the grid. Yet, it is not without its risks. As worldwide energy use is projected to increase 50% in the next 30 years, the future of nuclear could help meet that demand.

The large, circular earth work seen here is part of a major redevelopment project in Taparura, a district on the northern coast of Sfax, Tunisia. The project plans to restore the city’s beaches and create more than 1,000 acres (420 hectares) of land to accommodate new housing, hotels, recreational areas, green spaces and public facilities for about 50,000 residents. Taparura draws its name from the Roman Taparura, a fifth century town that Sfax was founded atop of in AD 849.

Cars and trucks sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic along the EDSA Highway in Manila, Philippines. Manila is recognized as the densest city in the world and also has some of the worst traffic on the planet. In addition to its large population, the city lacks quality infrastructure or additional modes of reliable transport. Furthermore, laws that have been implemented to limit the number of cars on the road or to mitigate the city’s poor urban design are rarely followed. In total, 71% of the air pollution in the Philippines comes from automobiles and the dirty air that they produce has been considered a life-threatening problem to Manila’s 12 million residents.

Photographer Mikael Buck captured some amazing photos inside a cave in the Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland. Vatnajökull is one of the largest ice caps in Europe and hosts several volcanoes. And it’s been used as a location in Game of Thrones.

“Getting to some of the caves involves a two-hour hike each way over the Vatnajökull glacier (with crampons) and once you arrive time is short,” said Buck. “Being so far north the daylight hours are very limited this time of year, so not being tied to a tripod was a massive help.” “The ice caves themselves were absolutely mind blowing,” said Buck. “It really felt like being in alien landscape.” “Every year, the shape of the caves change in summer as the ice melts and parts of the glacier move, then as winter begins Einar (the lead guide) goes out exploring the glacier, doing the dangerous work of checking if old caves are still safe and if any new ones have opened up over the summer.”

T-Centralen is the busiest and largest station of Stockholm’s metro system and it was opened to the traffic in 1957. At the beginning, the station was simply named Centralen, however soon after it was renamed to T-Centralen in order to avoid any name confusion with the central station. The station is considered to be one of the most unusual and beautiful in the world due to its incredible design: stylized blue flowers and leaf creepers.

This Overview shows cars parked next to the Hyundai manufacturing plant in Montgomery, Alabama, USA — a facility that can make 400,000 vehicles per year. We have an estimated 1 billion automobiles on our planet with 80 million new cars sold each year. As countries around the world begin to focus on traffic-reducing policies and curbing emissions from cars, the average distance traveled per person in automobiles may have hit its peak.

Wuhan, China, has made international news headlines in recent weeks after a coronavirus outbreak is believed to have originated in one of the city’s seafood markets late last year. The city is currently under quarantine to stop the spread of the virus, which has infected more than 4,400 people and killed more than 100 worldwide. Wuhan’s population of 11 million, combined with residents from other travel-restricted areas nearby, makes for a total quarantined population of more than 50 million.

Glacial ice and debris form incredible patterns around the edges of the Malaspina Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Located at the head of the Alaska Panhandle, the glacier is roughly 40 miles (65 km) wide and 28 miles (40 km) long, covering an area of about 1,500 square miles (3,900 square km). Decades of aerial photographs and radar data have shown that the Malaspina Glacier lost about 66 feet (20 m) of thickness between 1980 and 2000 — enough shrinkage to contribute 0.5% of the rise in global sea level.

One of the many, random little pull offs on hwy 101 in Oregon. No trail sign or break in the stone wall, just three stairs that lead to an overgrown maze of trails through the bushes. I’ve probably driven past this view 30 or more times over the years, but never took the time to look. Always stoked to find a fresh perspective in a place I thought I knew so well.

The Atocha Railway Station is the largest train station in Madrid, Spain. The facility serves as a hub for commuter trains, intercity and regional trains from the south, and AVE high-speed trains. In 1992, the station’s original terminal building was converted into a concourse with shops, a nightclub, and a 43,055-square-foot (4,000 square meter) tropical botanical garden.

The Port of Felixstowe is the busiest port in the United Kingdom, handling approximately 48% of the country’s containerized trade. The facility is able to accommodate ships that extend more than 1,312 feet (400 m) and have a cargo carrying capacity that is greater than half the volume of the Empire State Building.

The landscape of Lanzarote, one of the Spanish-owned Canary Islands, has been shaped by hundreds of years of volcanic activity. Located about 78 miles (125 km) off the north coast of Africa, the island contains numerous volcanic “tuff cones,” the largest of which — Caldera Blanca — measures 3,760 feet (1,140 m) across and 1,500 feet (450 m) tall. Lanzarote’s unique terrain and desert-like climate has been used to train astronauts and test Mars rovers.

Juba is the capital and most populous city of South Sudan, with an estimated population of about 525,000. It became the world’s newest capital city in July 2011, when South Sudan declared its independence from the Republic of the Sudan. Juba has more than doubled in size since 2005, when a peace agreement ended the Second Sudanese Civil War, but its infrastructure is still being repaired from damages it suffered during the conflict.
