13/12/2002 13:59 | Velvetide : I would not walk out on a 70% annualised return on cash .... but what has that to do with Orbis and the risks over its equity ? | dragonhorse

28/11/2002 22:04 | you're right touch2002, looks like a kitchen sink job, accounting losses on the back of goodwill amortisation, heavy write offs against assets not to mention the exceptional items - the management were buying shares earlier in the year - looks like this time an MBO may be on the cards (to the doom-mongers-the cashflow easily covers the debt - the cash gain for shareholders is about 35% of the market cap and that was just for the six months - the banks would not pull the debt as they effectively finance the operation which easily cover their charge - there are no assets to sell so to do so would be illogical) dragonhorse if you sniff at a 70% annualised return on your cash let me know in what you're invested | velvetide

28/11/2002 10:47 | LONDON (AFX) - Orbis PLC said it continues to face difficult markets after reporting a deepening in losses for the six months to Sept 30 2002. Michael Holmes, who became chief executive in September, said: "It continues to be a most difficult market for our traditional services." He said the new management team is making progress in realigning services and operations to meet the changing needs of customers. "Recovery will take time, but we are confident that our strategy will succeed." The group achieved an operating profit on continuing operations before the amortisation of goodwill and exceptional items of 2.7 mln stg for the first half, compared with 3 mln a year earlier, on turnover of 22.3 mln stg, up from 21.5 mln. Pretax profit for the period, before amortisation and exceptional items, was 0.6 mln stg compared with 0.5 mln. After amortisation and exceptionals, the pretax loss deepened to 3.146 mln stg from 2.198 mln. The board is not declaring an interim dividend. Cashflow improved, resulting in a net cash inflow from operating activities of 4.64 mln stg compared to an outflow from operating activities of 45,000 stg in the six months to Sept 30 2001. The board intends to effect a longer term arrangement with its banks which will be put in place prior to July 31 2003, when the current banking arrangements expire. Holmes said it has been evident for some time that the group could not continue to operate as it had done over the previous two years. An enormous amount of work has been done, and continues to be done, to change management and their attitudes and abilities, to improve operational structures and to remove non-performers, he said. This is being carried out against the background of an increasingly competitive market for the group's traditional service offering and the failure to renew a number of contracts. "In the short term this will inevitably impact on the profitability of the group," he said. He said the group must pursue this course of action, however, if it is to fulfil its strategy of being a major provider of more comprehensive services to property owners whilst remaining market leader in void property protection. newsdesk@afxnews.com slm/ | tony14
