Piedro - hmmm maybe I have called this wrong medium-term. Brazil Real seems to be plunging. We shall see.

Piedro - markets look ahead. at the recent share price Wilson Sons is on around 11X forecast earnings for 2016 and 9.3X for 2017. The yield for both years is 5%. So if the share price of Wilson Sons picks up, which it should over time, and the Brazil real at least stops depreciating then Ocean Wilsons asset value will go higher. The crux is when the worsening of the Brazilian economy starts to decelerate and we can see the corner in sight. Things should turn around by 2016 at the latest. These are my working assumptions anyway. The bottom line is that Wilson Sons is a great long-term stock which should see strong long-term results. Spoke too soon. Share price down again!! At least the investment portfolio balance of £4.72 a share should provide some support. Now 53% of the market value of Ocean Wilsons.

tttie, I like your optimism. Did you know that one of the services offered at their dry-ports is relabelling imports for the Brazilian market - "tropicalization"

My take is that Brazil economy will be under pressure for the remainder of 2015 and may start to recover in 2016. The cheap Brazil Real may spur exports of certain goods such as agricultural commodities. However, it will serve to curb imports along with weak consumer demand. Crux is when Brazil Real starts to stabilize and then strengthen. When this happens the asset value of the Wilson Sons stake will increase in sterling terms. Current situation is very frustrating but things should start to improve in a year's time

March 12, 2015 Rio Grande do Sul to Harvest Excellent Corn and Soybean Crops While much of Brazil endured hot and dry conditions during December and January, that was certainly not the case in Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. In fact, January rainfall in the state was the highest in thirty years. The state is generally noted for periods of dry weather during the summer resulting in lower yields, but this year it will be noted for having some of the very best crops in Brazil. Both the corn and soybean crops in Rio Grande do Sul benefited from very good weather this entire growing season regardless of the stage of development or the location. The full-season corn in the state is a little over 50% harvested, but in key corn growing regions such as Santa Rosa and Ijui, the corn is 80% and 90% harvested respectively. Corn yields from these two regions are in the range of 6,000 kg/ha (92.4 bu/ac) which is surpassing even the most optimistic early assessments. Estimates are that the corn production will exceed the 4.8 million tons estimated by the Emater/RS-Ascar (the extension service). The soybeans in the state are also expected to be very high yielding. Approximately 80% of the soybeans are in the final pod filling stage and 2% of the crop has been harvested with yields in the range of 3,000 kg/ha or 43.5 bu/ac. If these early yields are sustained as the harvest progresses, the state could easily set an all-time record high soybean yield. hxxp://www.soybeansandcorn.com/news/Mar12_15-Rio-Grande-do-Sul-to-Harvest-Excellent-Corn-and-Soybean-Crops

Yes so very little incentive to close the discount for other shareholders. Similar to Hansa trust which is controlled by the same family? I still cant work out why they would want all thier assets marked at c.30% discounts. Raise some debt and hold both companies privatly surely?

The company is controlled by a majority shareholder, it appoints the management. The investment portfolio came about as a result of their floating off part of the Brazilian company and was effected in order to diversify their risk. Consider it as a listed family trust, accordingly it normally trades at a discount.

hi, New here - can someone answer my very basic question? The book value of the investment portfolio and the holding in wilson sons far exceeds the current share price. Why does the company (wilson holdings) not sell off the assets? Has the company ever been fully valued by the market?
