26/6/2017 10:25 | Ah, the young ... they want to save the world but somebody else to pay for it. We're just about due another steep learning curve of Labour spending without regard for funding. It will probably be worse this time since all the main parties seem to have such terrible lack of talent and it is quite likely to coincide with a recession. Tories came into power and actually significantly increased spending (while bumping up stealth taxes) yet they are being charged with too much austerity. It would be quite funny if Labour got in on a mandate of ending austerity but actually had to implement it properly. I think the UK is about to become a black comedy like the 70s again. At least it inspired a lot of good TV. As the 2008- banking crisis runbles on, another two Italian banks have been rescued in a process agreed with the EU that defeats new EU laws designed to protect taxpayers. | aleman
26/6/2017 09:40 | MRPHIL - Glastonbury has always been much more than just a music festival. It's what makes Glastonbury the greatest festival in the world. Michael Eavis has always been a strong supporter of CND and environmental issues, so it's no surprise he invited Jeremy Corbyn on stage and lets face it, Corbyn smashed it with the largest crowd ever seen on the Pyramid stage! Perhaps we all have to realise, whether we like it or not, that politics is changing in this country. Can you really imagine 150,000 people singing 'Oh Theresa May' to the tune of the white stripes? I don't think so! | spittingbarrel
26/6/2017 09:25 | MrP - the trouble is 'the masses' with social media at the centre of their world believe this sort of thing. The Tories really need to open their eyes. Surely some of these statements are at the very least border line litigious? | skinny
26/6/2017 09:19 | I thought that was supposed to be a music festival, why on earth do we have politicians spouting forth and using the Grenfell disaster as a political point scoring tool? Are there no depths they will not plunge to? | mrphil
26/6/2017 09:11 | The Tories really need to open their eyes to the quickly changing game. | skinny

26/6/2017 08:22 | Morning all. Bright sunny start today although it seems the week will go steadily downhill. Made up some ground on the FTSE last week but will need another good week to break even for the month. YTD +8.7%. A mixed report on the garden. On the positive side fruit set has been very high and despite removing half of the apples and two thirds of the plums branches are still at breaking point. Have been pigging out on strawberries for a couple of months and as they subside raspberries are taking over. BUT. Neither courgettes or melons have set. Melons have all male flowers and courgettes all female. Not sure why. Books say due to "sress" but they have had a pretty cushy life. And blackcurrants have suffered major mildew problems. Weather hasn't been mildew inducing so maybe I overdosed on ash from the woodburner? 50 years of gardening and still learning. | shadowside
26/6/2017 08:22 | Morning All. Weather wasn't too bad over the weekend although a bit breezy and no real sunshine to speak of. Just a tiny amount of rain on Friday night, not enough to drown a flea. We did see 23.8°C which dropped to around 12°C last night which was quite refreshing. Healthy looking start this morning. | mrphil
26/6/2017 07:58 | Good morning. Little news about but it looks like US consumers are still struggling: | aleman
25/6/2017 22:37 | Very true, Skinny. It's amazing how long the female remembers your past misdeeds. | deanforester
24/6/2017 12:43 | Good morning. My SIPP finished up 0.14%, -0.30% on the week and is +9.80% YTD. A much cooler day today. Enjoy your weekend. DF - you probably both deserve the first and the second is also probably salient! | skinny
23/6/2017 18:46 | I'm down -0.237% on the day today (FTSE100 -0.204%), Down -1.05% on the week (FTSE100 -0.53%) . Worst falls: BA. -2.18%, AZN -1.94% and DGE -1.33%. Best rises: CLLN +2.54%, ADM +1.55% and S32 +1.48%. An eventful day. Shopping first, then off to a hotel to see about arrangements for our Diamond Wedding Celebration next year. Pub lunch on the way home, and now I'm watching the T20 from Taunton. Off to Monmouth for Old Boys' Day tomorrow. Weather looks a bit iffy, but who cares. Have a good weekend DF | deanforester
23/6/2017 17:02 | Re-installed AdBlockerPlus and seems to be OK now. | mrphil
23/6/2017 16:57 | +0.1% today but not a great week. -5.5% YTD. Cool, breezy and grey today but still no rain. We really could do with some now but at least the grass isn't growing very quickly. 19.4C after 14.4C. Have a good weekend. | aleman
23/6/2017 16:55 | Anyone else got the picture of a bloke on a graph in the header, obviously an advert? AdblockerPlus has obviously stopped working on Firefox. EDIT: Just checked, and Adblocker is now trying to ask me for a subscription, I thought it was always free? | mrphil
23/6/2017 16:49 | Yes that confirms it! SIPP -0.2%, pot -0.39% but the Virgin ISA +0.10% taking the YTD figures to SIPP +3.86%, pot +10.18% and the Virgin ISA (adjusted after today's withdrawal) +7.69% The managed fund part of the SIPP managed +0.60% on the week and is now +8.83% YTD so I must have a good selection for the current environment! Works social fund event tomorrow, then hopefully some boating on Sunday to check the performance after the summer scrub earlier in the week. Enjoy your weekends. MrP | mrphil
23/6/2017 16:33 | Well this will be the third down week in a row for the SIPP overall, and the managed funds have gained in all three of those weeks! Looks like my choice of funds is better than my choice of individual shares! | mrphil
23/6/2017 15:29 | Frustrating, just tried to withdraw some money from my Virgin ISA to pay for the new conservatory roof and it failed on the confirmation page so I now don't know if they have actioned it or not! | mrphil
23/6/2017 15:13 | Sounds interesting... | mrphil
23/6/2017 08:35 | Morning All. I wasn't around to check closing prices last night but I see ADVFN is showing a big gain for BRCI this morning even though the price is the same as last night, so I see what you mean! Excellent business meal last night and a great after dinner talk by Lord Digby Jones. Had a brief chat with him afterwards, very refreshing to hear someone so appreciative of the effort of small UK manufacturing. | mrphil
23/6/2017 07:56 | US indices could be setting themselves up for a big fall. An ambitious rebound in earnings is forecasted for the rest of the year yet oil prices have tumbled and US consumers don't look to be happy. Sears getting worse Sonic getting worse Bed Bath and Beyond getting worse Gasoline demand is falling Shop theft is increasing Cinemaa trips look set to fall | aleman
22/6/2017 20:50 | Hmm, -5.8% according to my ADVFN price feed. If it was a Friday then I'd probably put the effort in to source the correct prices elsewhere but I'm content to leave it as it stands for now. At least I can report a big gain tomorrow, well hopefully. :-) | hyden
22/6/2017 20:04 | -0.6% for me but I did have a decent ex-dividend. 23.2C. Spotted quite a bit but no rain to speak of. Had to water the plants again. Sun came out mid-afternoon but only warmed things a bit as it battled a streengthening easterly breeze. That is making the current 17C feel surprisingly chilly. | aleman |
