up 35% YTD ....while invested in around 270 stocks

that is amazing !!
well done

maybe you should give Aberdeen Inv. or F & C a ring and see if they have an opening !

(Ive had a great year so far as well, I guess like everyone.....but I used high concentration, high risk to achieve it....)

ref. other poster
"the money made on property was simply due to those rises"

in the UK since at least 1980.....the money has always been in buying and selling at the right time....

and the rental income has been largely irrelevant...

an important point imo.
(I was fortunate...and perhaps wise....to never buy at a bad time.....
once I waited since prices were falling, saved good %...)

Maybe it's the "collector" in me - it probably is too many, and I wouldn't recommend it to others, but I do what I enjoy.

I'm up 35% YTD, including new investment and dividends, but maybe more focus would have done better. Many are investment trusts / investment companies though. Everyone to his own. I'm happy getting to 300-350 stocks which is manageable for me, but then you definitely run out of options as there are only about 400 stocks in the UK that pass my quality test.

Smithie6 - good luck on the property..sounds like hard work. Not for me. I will transition into full time investment in a few years. Much less hard work! Need to be in my 50s before I can justify it though.

In a property obsessed country , where prices rose insanely for many years , most of the money made on property was simply due to those rises ; that is the past; the future will not prove so profitable .Property is way overvalued in the UK.

I was a builder for many years . All my wealth is now in shares : far less hassle.

topvest. that is too many stocks. but lloys and Taylor wimpey, they will give you medium term profit.

its real smithie. good luck with the property, hard work but a nice steady income. I am about to buy my first. Just a small one for buy to let. Looking for a project so i can get cheaper and renovate first.

Lets hope for a good week here. With so few shares in circulation this can move fast.

topvest,

"Diversification" , or just too thinly spread? You have given yourself a huge job keeping on top of 270 stocks; many funds hold less.

sounds like youve done well...

I gave up my day job.....some money into property....
...and at the moment Im half dead from renovating one of them...
...and at 28-30C inside (35-40C outside !)...its tough...and with your feet at 2 metres on step ladder..risky,
weekends off ? no chance....well sneaked half day off today...
I need to go back to normal work for a rest !!

one advantage with shares over running your own property....is that no physical work involved....just time to read accounts etc...
