I think they should have used the school holidays next week and the week after to do a mini hard lockdown... shut everything but essential services, all non essential shops - just have supermarkets open.

Labour's shadow just said in the HoC, that officials are reported to be working on a 3 week NATIONAL lockdown in November. He asked for gov't clarification. It wasn't forthcoming, just weasel words from the Health minister, in what sounded to me like buying time.

BE WARNED.

My personal instinct, is that it could very well be in the cards.

A few weeks ago, I posted the new £100 Switch offer from RBS, which runs for another month. I added that NatWest usually follows suit, with a short delay.

NatWest has duly announced a similar offer today, with a larger carrot, namely £125.

Details on MSE:

The NatWest Reward account gives £125 if you open an account and request a switch by 19 November 2020. There's a £2/mth fee, but you can earn up to £5 every month you log in to your account on mobile and pay out two direct debits of £2 or more, meaning you could be up £3/mth.

Bonda,

The Telegraph has a fresh article this evening. It begins:

'No basis for negotiations': UK tells EU's Michel Barnier not to come to London for talks.

Boris Johnson says Britain should prepare for final no-deal break as Lord Frost updates EU's chief negotiator on PM's latest statement.

Barnier was due in London on Monday. Not any more...

I'm a bit surprised that both £ and the FTSE are calm and steady this evening.

Yesterday, Ch4 had footage of French fisherman firing a flare horizontally on to a UK boat as they squabbled over some seafood or other. A sign of what may happen in the months ahead??

============== Huge Ongoing Health Costs Coming ===============

===== Long Covid is a new name ---- but buywell says ----- it is Organ Damage =====

Look back on the BUY thread and you will find a link to a medical paper that followed people that had recovered from SARS and looked at how they had coped or improved a year after being discharged.

50% had long term medical issues that meant they had never worked again

The organ damage that SARS caused

Covid-19 is causing organ damage as did SARS only worse

Long COVID doesn’t discriminate.
Healthy people, Young people, those who apparently had a mild case of COVID-19.

Every system in our bodies can be affected.

PLUS

This could be forever and worse still become an even bigger problem if someone gets Covid-19 a second time

Many politicians have had Covid-19 now --- how they cope in coming months might cast some light on this huge creeping long term health issue.

Data suggests up to 80 per cent of people who require hospitalisation with COVID-19 will experience post-COVID-19 symptoms that is the size of the problem

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) says common long-term symptoms that will require treatment include fatigue, shortness of breath and chest pain, as well as rarer, more severe conditions such as heart and lung damage, stroke and neurological decline.

It appears to me that we're in this position due to the EU's intransigents, so I hope that Johnson holds firm and doesn't just roll over and give in to the EU.

Be careful out there! Another case of reinfection.
Washoe County includes Reno, up in the NW corner of Nevada, close to the border with California.

DM:

An unnamed 25-year-old man from Washoe County, Nevada, tested positive for the coronavirus on April 18 after developing mild symptoms
He recovered during isolation and received two negative test results in May
On May 28, he started feeling the same symptoms and went to a primary care doctor, who recommended he go the hospital
He tested positive again at the hospital, 48 days after his initial test, and needed oxygen support
Genetic testing showed that the strains of virus from each bout were different, indicating a true reinfection
The Nevada man is the fifth person worldwide to be reinfected and other cases have been reported in Hong Kong, Belgium, the Netherlands and Ecuador

Martin Lewis spoke on R5L today about negative interest rates.

If you're interested, go to MSE News and read the condensed report; it contains a link to the podcast, which appears to last nearly half an hour. He addresses the impact on mortgage holders and savers, among other things.

Normally, less.

Google 'bank profitability negative interest rates' for a stack of information and relevant questions.

I don't trust the girls to run NWG particularly well under normal conditions, let alone negative rates, which the market now thinks could be introduced next year.

By mail is the key.

I doubt too many will be lying, given that it's a straightforward online and anonymous exercise in ticking who you voted for by mail.

Well, guys, sorry to disappoint you, but the SOB has lost ground during the day - Biden remains around 4/9, with the pig easing from 7/4 to around 2/1, even 9/4 with a couple of bookies. Meanwhile, the vote count on TMZ has increased from 56k to nearly 68k, but the percentages remain rock steady at 70/30.

I doubt too many will be lying, given that it's a straightforward online and anonymous exercise in ticking who you voted for by mail.

But three weeks is a long time in politics....we'll see how it shakes down.
