BlackRock’s Avigdori buys National Grid

BlackRock manager Adam Avigdori has taken a stake in National Grid (NG) after the shares powered down, creating a ‘valuation opportunity’.

He added the Citywire Elite Companies AAA-rated utility company to his £37m BlackRock Income & Growth (BRIG) investment trust. The shares rose 1.6% to 949p on Monday.

‘We view the recent rights issue, a dividend cut and a 20% fall in the share price [at the end of May] as a valuation opportunity with the company’s shares now being well-funded for the future,’ said Avigdori, who runs the trust with David Goldman.

He said the growing demand for power consumption driven by electrification, alongside AI advancements ‘indicates a significant growth trajectory

Nothing received from Barclay SI yet, not sure if it is down to the IT outage or not, usually the blue-chip FTSE dividends land same day..

The calculation for the rebase is the 24 actual divi of 58.52p x 24/31 = 45.3p. That is what the 24 divi would have been, had the number of issued shares already been enlarged by 7/24 from the rights issue on the same total payout.

The 25 divi should then be 45.3p plus CPIH inflation.

Thanks for confirming rebase. Rights issue document nearly 200 pages and didn’t fancy searching for the relevant paragraph.

Given that, I don’t believe a rebased dividend in any way diminishes the bullish case.

I had a chat with Andy Agg and he is confident that by 2029 the Asset Value of the Company will be circ £100 billion. But this also depends that the money raised is well spent. When I was at NG for every £1 spent it was expected that at least £1.50 of value would transpire, ie, the Company doesn’t spend without expecting a decent return, that was the philosophy at NG and am reassured that that has followed through to today’s practice.

Jam62,

The rebase dividend was reconfirmed at yesterday's AGM, which I attended.

I am down overall due to the first (of many) RI and insufficient funds to buy more. Not sure I want any more rights issues, but only 7 of 60B raised so far...

I am 10% up after buying in exdivi ... if this continues the 1-2% divi difference matters not at this point.

jam, the divi is being rebased next year. If you bought your total rights allocation, then in cash terms your divi stays the same. But after that, it's very safe and growing.

I will check to see whether the company intends to rebase the dividend to take account of the enlarged share capital. Some do and some don’t.

That assumes all things being equal, however, the money raised should be wisely invested to increase returns.

It's not a 6% yield - it's 4.7% at the current price. Last year's dividend of 58p total has been diluted by the rights issue so this year's total should be 45p.

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. I believe this to be a genuine growth stock rather than just a boring high-yielding utility. Very rarely will you see genuine growth stocks with a high yield, in this case close to 6%.

The recent successful rights issue, and accompanying indigestion has created an anomaly in terms of share rating. In recent days a number of prominent city brokers have identified the security as having outstanding value.
