Yes, absolutely.

"The stock has gained more than 36pc since Mr Holliday became chief executive in 2007. However, the greatest source of returns has been the steady dividend income – include this and the total return is more than 120pc during the past nine years."

With a dividend of almost 5% and the stock market floundering, its a safe haven whilst QE takes its toll.

An interesting view, mundungus, but for me, this snippet says exactly why I and so many others continue to hold the shares:

'This means the shares offer an inflation-linked prospective dividend yield of 4.7pc.'

P?E ratio of 16 times Questor reckons they look expensive for a utility stock that isn’t expecting much earnings or revenue growth during the next 10 years. Hold.

National Grid (LSE: NG) has been a major beneficiary of the drive towards defensive stocks in recent months. The company has seen its share price ascend 9% during the past four weeks alone, and with a flurry of economic factors still troubling the markets -- from the fallout of the Volkswagen emissions scandal through to fears of Chinese economic cooling and the timing of Federal Reserve rate hikes -- I believe the stock could continue its surge higher. And unlike utilities plays like Thames Water or, more famously, energy suppliers like Centrica, National Grid's vertically-integrated structure does not leave it at the mercy of draconian, profits-smashing action from regulators in the near future. In addition to this, RIIO price controls in the UK are also helping to reduce capital seepage at National Grid, another promising sign for future earnings. As one would expect, the bottom line at National Grid is not expected to take off any time soon, and a 1% rise is currently anticipated for the 12 months to March 2016. Still, one does not invest in such companies in anticipation of rip-roaring growth, while a P/E rating of 15.8 times offers very decent value. When you also factor in a giant 4.7% dividend yield, I reckon National Grid offers great bang for one's buck regardless of recent stock price gains.

if the true value is well over a tenner
then it is safe buy/add/hold,
it will rise up to going ex-divi, why cash in?
interest/savings rates are going nowhere

added a few more, hedging against a possible
wider market dip over next few wks

Over sold again. 30p from Fri to now mon morning. This share based on fundamentals, asset base and new cap spend (which is recoverable from customers), should be in excess of £10/ share!

Reporting interim results in less than a month with an anticipated interim payment of 14.6p to be paid early Jan.

The true value of NG is well over £10 / share but the 'City' need educating. They still see NG as part of the big six retail energy group.

National Grid has the most secure income stream of any company on the market.

If Joe Public want secure energy then they must pay for it, end of!

"a chance to put mining profits here, before next set of Chinese manu., figs out
and what banks debt risks there are"

Absolutely! We are not out of the woods yet by any means. I bought Shell & BP but very low down and have allowed margin to grow without adding to those holdings. Chinese GDP report in about a week or so could throw a huge spanner in the works.

I have RIO but will probably ditch soon.

I am keeping NG irrespective of interest rate and bond futures.

And still it goes up. I can only assume that with interest rates on the floor and the US talking about needing yet more QE, good solid dividend payers are back in fashion. What goes down might go back up, in this case. New highs by Christmas? Roll on a Santa rally.

Tempus (sat Times) has joined the bandwagon
plugging NG, the point he didn't make was, the third qtr general market
performance has always been the worst, and the last qtr the best
why sell? should be about accumulating on the dips,

Hi all, I sold a Spreadbet I had on National Grid as it looks very toppy in the short term. I still hold a big chunk of NG. which I keep for the 5% Divvy but there were a few Charting Signals suggesting the Up move would falter a bit. Anyway, I wrote a quick Blog about it this afternoon at:

Hope you find it interesting, cheers wd

gbb483. 'Global community' is a political sound bite.
As for Iceland, 87% of it's power comes from hydro, but it is a highly volcanic island with 26 high temperature geothermal fields and the other 13% comes from that, in other words volcanoes. Thank goodness the UK doesn't have those - except in the imagination of those who think they are also common ground within a 'global community'.
That said, I am happy to stay with National Grid as they distribute the power whatever energy source it comes from.
