Time for NG to get out, last time this happened it affected profits in the US. Too much risk.

Explosions at powerstations, feel for those there.

One substation in NY exploded (on Sky news). AGK supply temporary power so I've been looking at them again yesterday. I agree NG should get out of the US as the track record for UK companies over there is not great.

I thought the power cuts were voluntarily made to protect the network as best they could?

But superstorm or not, the states isn't the place for UK companies to do business imv. I wish NG would sell up and get out. But in the meantime, lets hope the damage and deaths in the states are minimised and they quickly get back to normal.

New York flooded and 6 million without electricity. Transformers exploding in Manhattan. But NG shareholders comfortably asleep waiting for their dividend!

The network will be damaged, of course, but the real (and unjustified) damage will be to NG's reputation as Democrat politicians pile in and criticise the time taken to repair the network and, as with BP, enjoy kicking a Company that is not just in foreign ownership but British to boot!

Anyone know how National Grid could be financially affected if their distribution network is severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy? Are they insured for that kind of risk, or can they charge repair costs to their customers? This is the largest storm to hit New York for a very long time. I assume electricity cables are mainly underground but away from the city there could be pylons damaged perhaps?

It's going to be interesting in the next couple of months;

With the US elections on the 6th Nov (which could determine a new US energy policy)

NG Interim Results due on 15th Nov. Anticipating a declared divi of 14.48/share to be paid in Jan '13, although do not be surprised if Steve Holliday down plays the results especially as OFGEM will be watching carefully before the final RIIO is published.

Dec 17th Final RIIO published.

Yes and I did - these are now by value, my single biggest SIPP holding.

I have traded them probably about 3 times since the RI and have been tempted more than once as they have reached new highs this year.

Yes.
If you had 10 shares worth £86.40 and got 4 rights shares at £1.75 you had 14 shares market value £93.40 or £6.67 each.

Skinny,

Taking into account the RI of a few years ago, isn't £7.10 a new high full stop? The highest Grid have ever been was £8.64 / share, but this was before the RI when there were less shares in Circ. If an Investor had taken up all the RI entitlement doesn't the current price work out higher than the old £8.64?

Ofgem's recent announcement about power margin shortfalls in the future may be their way of communicating to the public that new power stations / generation development together with the required system infrastructure that National Grid has to build to connect the generation to the customer is essential and a softening to their last harsh RIIO proposals, ie, maybe the final proposal due on 17th Dec will be a lot nicer to National Grid?

A bid at £9 per share? I should be so lucky. If GE wants to buy the US operations, I am sure that all they need to do is to ask nicely and offer the right price. This story does not have the ring of truth.

Thanks - I hadn't seen that, here's the link -

The powers that be in the City are adamant that there is a multi-billion-pound takeover bid being hatched in the utilities sector. Corporate financiers have apparently been busy burning the midnight oil for weeks in order to bring the deal to light before the end of the month.

All fingers yesterday were again pointed at National Grid. Shares of the operator of most of England's energy pylons and pipelines touched 693p amid growing speculation that GE Capital, the financial services unit of US giant General Electric, and its advisors are working on a cash offer well north of £9 a share. The close was 2p easier at 691.5p.

The word is GE Capital wants to get its hands on National Grid's American activities and would be a seller of its UK operations.
