TGR: Are producers outside the U.S. benefitting from lower operating costs due to shrinking oil prices and non-dollar currencies?

DG: They are without a doubt. To U.S.-based investors, the gold price looks to be languishing, but gold is hitting record levels in the euro, peso and Canadian dollars. For companies operating in non-U.S. dollar regions, their operating costs are much less relative to the dollar. In addition, lower oil and gas prices will eventually benefit the bottom line. Operating costs could be 5% to 10% less, not an insignificant amount. That is equivalent to the gold price rising $30–70/oz. And the benefit from lower oil and energy costs goes straight to the bottom line. In some cases, for some companies, the stronger dollar/weaker local currency impact can be even more significant.

In addition to currency and oil and gas prices savings, cost pressures from inputs such as chemicals, equipment and steel are abating. Labor costs are rather sticky, but some of the material costs are coming down. Miners are getting better terms across the board.

Mar 16th 2015: Canaccord Genuity reiterated a speculative buy rating on AIM-listed
Minera (MIRL) in a research note this week, setting a target price of 4p per share
At that price it's essentially a sell rec.

APPLE to boost the gold price? Seems strange but true at 750 tons of gold a year, third only to India and China as the biggest gold purchasers on the planet! It would certainly put a floor under the gold price.

Or maybe, they are pushing to the finish line for the best deal possible?

Obviously I have no actual clue.

getting v. late in the day now, can only assume they're struggling to get a deal finalised, or the terms are restrictive.

Hey all...
Struggling to understand the circumstances for anyone to put a trade through for £8 ? Would the dealing commission alone not negate that? I see things like this go through every once in a while and they always intrigue me...

Also curious how the offer price started at 4p this morning and slowly fell back - is that the the brokers test the market, starting high to see if anyone is buying and then gradually reduce if not until it finds a point where people are satisfied to trade at?

Am invested in MIRL by the way lest these seem like totally irrelevant questions :)

Agreed. Thanks for those really helpful charts, Bikwik! Seemingly sizable buys are going through TD Securities and Cannacord in Toronto. Someone is hoovering up those shares.

As it turned out we were up 8% by the close as opposed to 4% up earlier today.

So the price appears to be taking the least line of resistance, which apparently is now up, strange as that may seem, despite a 165k sell earlier in the session.

Well, I along with everyone else have no idea what Courtney Chamberlin is going to come up with. It does though seem that the price for whatever reason has started to rise. If it closes up again tomorrow then that will indicate to me, and possibly some others, that further upside will follow. Keep watching!

Well, I can understand your initial scepticism.

However, this is the first day in two weeks, in fact since the rally high, that there has been a rise. (Of course today is not over yet, so we'll have to see what the quote is by 4.30pm).

What may seem insignificant at the time, when viewed later on with hindsight becomes the obvious point at which a change began.

I'm not saying for definite that the turn is now occurring, only highlighting the fact that it could be.

Note also, that the start of the prior three week rise in January began from similar price activity.

IF WE CLOSE UP TODAY AND WE GET A FURTHER RISE - SAY .25P AS WELL TOMORROW, THEN THE NEXT UPLEG IS MOST PROBABLY UNDERWAY.

Indeed the bigger question is how much of the project they will have to give away to finance it !

This could drop from here

I noticed the price quote has gone up to 3.00-3.50 from 3.00-3.25. Thought the chart was now starting to look a little bit more interesting!
