Amazing that they had an export licence refused for an order in India. Sounds like it may have been for as much as £125k a not insignificant amount for a small company... I guess there must have been nuclear implications... but then India already has a bomb .....strange.

Press Release 21 April 2005
Millbrook Instruments Limited
receives Queen's Award for Enterprise

Millbrook Scientific Instruments plc (AIM:MBK), the designer and manufacturer of innovative scientific instruments used for nanoscale investigations of surfaces, coatings and thin films, today announces that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Millbrook Instruments Limited has received the prestigious Queen's Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category.

Millbrook Instruments Limited ('Millbrook') has developed a unique device called the MiniSIMS. This desktop analysis instrument investigates the surface chemistry of objects. It operates by liberating atoms and molecules from the extreme surface of the sample, and then determining their identities by measuring their individual weights. The MiniSIMS is used in universities, government research centres and industrial laboratories. Applications range from the improvement of high technology products such as hip replacement joints, integrated circuits and self-cleaning window glass to the preservation of museum exhibits and the identification of fake gemstones.

The International Trade category of the Queen's Award recognises that, during the last three years, Millbrook has demonstrated substantial growth in overseas earnings and commercial success, to levels that are outstanding for the goods, services or size of business concerned. This achievement has already received praise from UK Trade & Investment, who presented Millbrook with an award for ' outstanding achievement in international trade' less than a month ago.

Up to the year 2001, Millbrook (then comprising just 3 people) focused its marketing activity on the UK. In 2001, however, the company turned its attention to the global market in order to widen the MiniSIMS user base and establish a dominant position in this emerging niche market. To cope with the increasing demand, the Millbrook team has now grown to 10 people, who are responsible for technical sales, production, testing, installation and after-sales service of the equipment. This approach has proved highly successful - sales have risen by 265% over the last three years and over 80% of sales revenue is now generated from exports.

Dr John Eccles, Millbrook's Commercial Director who has spearheaded the export programme, said: "The unique nature of our MiniSIMS has meant success even in a country such as Japan which is home to many of the world's top scientific instrument manufacturers. However, developing and maintaining a satisfied customer base across Europe, North America and Asia would not have been achieved without the sustained hard work and commitment of everyone involved."

Commenting on receiving the award, Dr Peter Stefanini, Executive Chairman of Millbrook Scientific Instruments plc said: "We are honoured for Millbrook to be given such a prestigious accolade. It reflects a strong performance from a team of highly talented people."

Editors' Notes:

About Millbrook Scientific Instruments Plc

Millbrook Scientific Instruments plc via its three operating companies, is a designer and manufacturer of innovative scientific instruments used for nano-scale investigations of surfaces, coatings and thin films. The Group joined AIM in December 2004.

Millbrook Instruments Limited (Blackburn)

Millbrook Instruments Limited was the original member of the Millbrook Group. The core product is the MiniSIMS, based on a technology known as Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) - a sensitive analysis technique that can examine the extreme surface of complex materials in three dimensions.

The MiniSIMS marked a significant advance in surface analysis instrumentation. This had previously involved the use of very expensive capital equipment, occupying an entire laboratory and operated by highly skilled personnel. In contrast, the MiniSIMS is an automated, self-contained, mobile instrument, which provides a comprehensive and low cost route to surface chemical characterisation.

Applications span a range of high technology fields such as electronics, aerospace and biomaterials. Specific product development and quality control applications include: architectural coatings on steel and glass; the contact surfaces of medical implants; the structure and connection points of integrated circuits; and the active surfaces of solar cells.

Millbrook has an extensive network of international distributors, and a global client base which includes a broad span of industries, research facilities and universities. It is based in Blackburn in the North-West of England, an area well known for mass spectrometry and scientific equipment manufacture. International success has driven strong growth in sales, and exports now account for over 80% of revenue.

Millbrook Instruments Limited has previously won a range of prestigious scientific and commercial accolades, including: the Achievement Award of the UK Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers ( page06.htm); a DTI Smart Achievement Award; Millennium Product status; a UK Trade & Investment Award and numerous local business awards in the North West.

Aquila Instruments Limited (Cambridge)

The acquisition of Aquila Instruments Ltd by the Group in March 2003 broadened the portfolio to include instrumentation for measurement and investigation of thin films - in particular optical coatings. Aquila supplies spectrophotometers known as the nkd7000 and the nkd8000, which enable measurements of thickness, refractive index and extinction coefficient to be made simultaneously on surface coatings.

Micro Materials Limited (Wrexham)

Micro Materials Limited was acquired in September 2004 and brought expertise in the high growth niche sector of mechanical nanotesting into Millbrook. The MML NanoTest is a system which provides a high degree of precision and reproducibility in the mechanical testing of coatings in the micro to nano range of thicknesses, including hardness, fracture toughness, creep, adhesive failure, surface friction, impact, scratch and wear resistance. These criteria can be analysed under varying temperature and humidity conditions.

About the Queen's Awards

The Queen's Awards for Enterprise are the UK's most prestigious awards for business performance and are recognised as one of the world's most desirable commercial honours. They reward outstanding achievement by UK companies in three separate categories: International Trade; Innovation; Sustainable Development.

The Awards are made each year by the Queen, on the advice of the Prime Minister, who is assisted by an Advisory Committee that includes representatives of government, industry and commerce, and the trade unions.

Sold my 14+ k share today.
Reason !, why come to AIM only to be quieter than you were on Ofex ?. To get exposure to more investment ?.For that they needed to make a splash with loads of orders not 1 rns with 3 buys. Poor reasons but i guess my patience ran out after a 18 month wait.
Still a future big company imho.

isn't nano technology the futre. big potential. The next few paragraphs provide a brief introduction to the core concepts of molecular nanotechnology, followed by links to further reading.
Manufactured products are made from atoms. The properties of those products depend on how those atoms are arranged. If we rearrange the atoms in coal we can make diamond. If we rearrange the atoms in sand (and add a few other trace elements) we can make computer chips. If we rearrange the atoms in dirt, water and air we can make potatoes.
Todays manufacturing methods are very crude at the molecular level. Casting, grinding, milling and even lithography move atoms in great thundering statistical herds. It's like trying to make things out of LEGO blocks with boxing gloves on your hands. Yes, you can push the LEGO blocks into great heaps and pile them up, but you can't really snap them together the way you'd like.

In the future, nanotechnology will let us take off the boxing gloves. We'll be able to snap together the fundamental building blocks of nature easily, inexpensively and in most of the ways permitted by the laws of physics. This will be essential if we are to continue the revolution in computer hardware beyond about the next decade, and will also let us fabricate an entire new generation of products that are cleaner, stronger, lighter, and more precise

Thanks Sid. This is a nice little company. They just need to convert interest into material sales now. The next 6m is critical.

Thanks for that Sid,
Its is in this case, good to be proved wrong. I was getting a bit MORE restless with MBK after expecting a lot of movement after joining AIM. I am much happier to see some RNS on AIM, as all holders will be.
Fingers crossed it can get itself noticed to a wider audience !.

Are you sure about that, tenapen? The announcement does clearly say 'three NEW orders'. I must admit that they do usually announce the orders prior to delivery, and this one did confuse me. It would be very unlike their previous style to put out a misleading announcement.

I think I'll send them an email to get clarification.

Cheers,

Sid

I was hoping for news, indeed expecting news, but not this rehash of old orders "delived". This will explain the early buy of 5k and the later sell of 25k after someone read the RNS properly.
This does not give me confidence but i will continue to hold, for now.
regards,
kenny.

News today of a 'new' order worth £235,000
or is it just confirmation of previous orders delivered this week?

Market Cap = 3.58M
From Shares in Issue 37.7 x Share Price 9.5p
Net Assets = 2M
If Assets = Share Price then should be 5.3p

Looking back over its price history
around this price April 03(low)
and then around 12.0p(high) very soon afterwards
But always decending back from its 3 highs.

What has caused the highs for this company?
Has it decended from its highs because of lack of volume?

No change from being on Ofex, NO VOLUME.
It would have been cheaper to stay there also.
I would have thought that the way to launch your company on a bigger market would have been to have something up your sleeve by way of a announcement. Not silence.
I will continue to hold for a month or two. If no news......

Some Figures comparing 6 month 2003 with 2004(excluding Micro Materials):

Sales up from 358,000 to 529,000 = +48%
Direct Cost of Sales up from 120,000 to 164,000 = +36% extra cost

Therefore Gross Profit = +53%

Operating Expenses down from 367,000 to 328,00 = 12% reduction

EBITA = 37,000 from 529,000 sales = +14% profit compared with -36% loss

Therefore a 50% increase in profits for the year

If only the future were predictable... But then we'd all know wouldn't we?

Sounds like a crystal ball job to me ;)

Good luck,
