26/8/2007 05:47 | August 26, 2007 Ungaro cuts a dash for Latins Matthew Goodman THE fashion group Marchpole is in advanced talks over a deal to take its Emanuel Ungaro label into South America. The group, headed by executive deputy chairman Michael Morris, is close to announcing an agreement to open 29 stores in Colombia. The board hopes that this will mark the first step towards growing a significant presence in the region. The deal would lead to Marchpole's Colombian partner opening a flagship store selling the main Ungaro fashion range, with a further 28 outlets in the country selling the Ungaro Homme diffusion line. It is understood that the British firm, which counts Homebody and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (JCC) among its stable of brands, has also begun talks to secure the worldwide rights to a large and high-end US fashion house. It is hoped that the talks, which are said to be at a preliminary stage, would eventually lead to a deal to allow Marchpole to produce a new range with the label for spring 2009. The group has been working hard to expand with new labels and into fresh territories to ease concerns over last year's loss of its licence to design and distribute the Yves Saint Laurent brand. In February, it announced the acquisition of Greenmark, which makes and distributes shoes, for a reported £3m. It also agreed a tie-up with jeans maker Lee Cooper to produce a range of upmarket denim clothing for its JCC label. Britain's flagship store for JCC is expected to open in London before the end of this year. Financially, the company appears to be in good shape. In the year to last March, profits nearly doubled to £8.3m from £4.5m. In the same period sales climbed 136%, from £38.4m to £90.5m. The shares closed on Friday at 123½p, giving Marchpole a market value of £33.6m. | polzeath | |
