25/5/2018 17:50 | Brexit+ Well done, yes, Colin Bland, most wonderful fielder and no mean batsman with an average the turn of 40 I seem to recall. My first view of Trueman who was in the RAF but viewed as an England prospect, was at the Edgbaston Test trial in 1951 where he was playing for The Rest Fielding at deep long-on, close to where I was sitting, he threw the ball in hitting Len Hutton who was batting in the small of the back. Fielders gathered round solicitously, all except Trueman who remained unconcerned at deep long on. Typical. Statham was a superb lissom bowler who rarely had the choice end at which to bowl. Agree about John Snow very quick with nasty lifting deliveries from a good length. His 7-40 at ?Melbourne on the 70-71 tour was magnificent. I have one of his poetry volumes somewhere:-) I have seen them all including Tyson and there is little doubt in my mind that at his short peak he was the fastest. | mayers
25/5/2018 17:42 | Dowley reinvests his dividend. | meanwhile
25/5/2018 17:08 | Mayers Are you thinking of Colin Bland? He gave a demo at Canterbury in 1965 of fielding on the run and hitting a single stump. Brilliant to watch. | brexitplus

25/5/2018 15:34 | Only saw Fred Trueman, and then late in his career at Canterbury for Yorkshire against Kent in 1967. The papers had just written him off. For a few over he has very fast. Broke England opener Brian Luckhurst’s finger. Godfrey Evans made a one match comeback as Alan Knott was playing for England and there was no suitable backup. As Evans came into bat Fred dusted the popping crease with his Yorkshire cap. They were best of friends. Late in the Kent innings fast bowler Alan Brown who was suggested as a replacement for Fred hit him for four consecutive boundaries, including a 6, in his 33. Trueman applauded him, then removed his off bail. Great day’s cricket. Lovely weather I remember. We were able to mix with the players before the match and get autographs. Trueman a real hero. Derek Randall was a real hero in the midlands. Some of the players I played with knew him. Very generous I was told. My time was Fred Rumsey, John Price, John Snow (wonderful action), David Brown of test bowlers. all quick. Met Graham Dilley in the loo at Tunbridge Wells!!!! | brexitplus
25/5/2018 14:34 | brexit+ Yes remember the Randall 174 - and what a fielder esp coverpoint, rivalled Washbrook and I imagine Jack Hobbs, and the SA chap whose name eludes me for the moment. Yes you are right, Glen Chapple. Like Willey never got a chance in his prime. Do you remember Les Jackson (Derby) fine bowler in the Arnold. O'Nions style? Never got a look in with Trueman, Statham, Loader etc and of course an unpopular county albeit with seaming pitches. Bukko Perhaps he was wearing several!! Or perhaps the problem was that he had got it "between balls". | mayers
25/5/2018 12:15 | Re DR One wonders did he ever find a comfortable box. He was constantly hauling at it between balls, whether facing or standing at the bowler's end. | bukko
25/5/2018 09:18 | Mayers Centenary Test, Melbourne, 1977. Randall scored 174 as I remember. Fun character. | brexitplus
25/5/2018 08:41 | "I love the picture of his offering his cap to what must have been a bouncer from Dennis Lillee. Unfortunately we don't see humour like this these days." No further comment required. | meanwhile
25/5/2018 06:16 | I don’t think it matters who the coach is or selector, it’s all down to the attitude of the players. They don’t think in terms of 5 days. Always in a rush. Too much limited over cricket so batsmen don’t learn to build an innings.Ive always maintained that a team should aim to bat for 50% of a test match. Have never thought Root should be captain. He is the best bat. Too much pressure. Love him or hate him, Boycott talks a lot of sense when it comes to test cricket. I think it is a Glen Chapple. Good player. | brexitplus
24/5/2018 21:54 | Brexit+ I love the picture of his offering his cap to what must have been a bouncer from Dennis Lillee. Unfortunately we don't see humour like this these days. Not certain the "smooth" appointment of Ed Smith is right for the England team. Would have preferred a more "rugged" appointment, perhaps Peter Willey (never picked for England in his prime),Graham Chapple (likewise), Martin Moxon (how did he put up with you know who?)or Jason Gillespie of recent Yorkshire achievement. Judging from today's effort they don't seem to have benefitted very much from the winter. | mayers
24/5/2018 17:24 | Watched it on TV. Terrible running. I played for Notts Forest CC in 1977. All local lads. Some knew Derek Randall. Comments unprintable. | brexitplus
24/5/2018 16:56 | Yes, ran out the local hero (Notts) who everyone loved! | mayers
24/5/2018 15:39 | Aye lad. Corridor of uncertainty. Derek Randall. Our Geoffrey!!! | brexitplus
24/5/2018 15:35 | Brexit+ Yhey would run one another out. Does that remind you of anybody? :-) | mayers
24/5/2018 15:27 | Totally agree Yertiz. But Senior is much smaller than GKN and I think that when Melrose prove themselves it would be easier. Am listening to the cricket. We need to do better. Opening first four should be Miller, Roper, Peckham and Martin!!!! | brexitplus
24/5/2018 15:25 | The Monopolies & Mergers Commission would no doubt find something to grumble about if this was proposed. Why is there only one Monopolies and Mergers Commission?? Surely an Oxymoron! | yertiz
24/5/2018 13:45 | Basic analysis for Senior and GKN. Lots of similarities and opportunities for a merger!!! Operating profit margin % : 2015, 2016, 2017 Senior overall : 12.7, 9.3, 8.1 Senior Aero. : 13.3, 11.2, 10.6 Senior Flexonics : 14.4, 8.2, 6.7 GKN overall : 8.8, 8.2, 6.4 GKN Aero : 10.9, 9.9, 4.8 GKN Driveline : 8.2, 7.7, 7.1 Key Customers in decreasing value SENIOR Aero : Rolls Royce, Boeing, Spirit, UTC, Lockheed Martin, Safran, Airbus GKN Aero : Airbus, Boeing, United Technologies, GE, Lockheed Martin, Rolls Royce, Sarfran SENIOR Flexonics : Cummings, Caterpillar, Renault Nissan, GKN Driveline : Fiat Chrysler, VW, Ford, GM, Renault Nissan, Toyota, Tata, Mercedes Different but complementary products. Both have/had decreasing Operating Profit Margins. Both operate in Aero and “Auto” Both have some of the same top customers and different. Opportunity for cross selling. Good synergy and potential for cost-savings and increased operating profit margins under the Melrose model. | brexitplus
24/5/2018 09:50 | Yertiz, agreed. It seems a number of companies are using the Melrose approach of splitting themselves into “autonomous units” and letting them “run themselves”. The area where this differs from Melrose, I think, is in capital allocation. For listed companies, in the end share price appears all important so capital is a limited resource that needs to be fought over. One of the reasons I like Melrose is their statement that capital allocation is based on need and decisions are made quickly rather than prolonged negotiation with the board, which may lead to loss of opportunities. It will be interesting to see how this pans out with GKN. | brexitplus
24/5/2018 08:31 | Make that over 5%! | gettingrichslow
24/5/2018 08:30 | Yertiz, yes I'm on a train right now watching the share price soar...Up about 4% so far today...Do you know if the Israeli WHT issue will change with a full listing? My sell and re-buy after XD day strategy won't work once they leave AIM because stamp duty will be payable! | gettingrichslow
24/5/2018 07:23 | Or North Korea? As an aside for GRS, RNS out this morning for Plus500 Application for a Full Listing (FTSE 250). Nice. | yertiz
23/5/2018 16:13 | Getting, surely you mean “all peace breaks out.” Let’s see if it lasts before celebrating. Could be like Trump and the Chinese. Let’s face it, the two ms, as mattboxy said, need an audience. Perhaps just trying to draw us back in. Excuse me if I’m a bit cynical. | brexitplus |
