Increased by 1.59%. Aberforth must see continued value in McColl's going forward.

McColl's say they are going to look at the range of beers and ciders they sell. As a cider drinker I am sadden at the lack of choice of ciders offered in supermarkets generally, just the standard rubbish.

I remember years ago, the larger Tesco's used to sell locally produced ciders as well as the standard range. For some unknown reason they stopped doing so, so gave me less of a reason to shop at Tesco's.

Out of all the main supermarket groups, Waitrose tends to offer the best choice when it comes to ciders.

It seems reasonable to me for Morrisons to wait and see whether selling Safeway products in McColl's stores or Morrison Daily stores are better and for a good few more newsagents to be closed with new larger stores being opened before they make any move on McColl's.

McColl's 1,000sq ft stores and smaller are completely useless to Morrisons.

Probably a reasonable estimate - but will MRW let them stay independent that long I wonder..

Ditching POs, increasing the number of post offices in McColl's stores will bring in more customers.

The important thing is for McColl's to continue to reduce the number of loss making newsagents when their leases expire or there is a break in the lease which I would say is at least a further 100 to as many as 200 newsagents still to be closed which will take another 3 to 5 years while opening new larger and more profitable stores.

Does feel like most (analysts in particular) are missing the point on MCLS - the point is the Morrisons supply deal and the conversion to Morrisons format. Isn't going to be a quick process but appears to be very successful where it's been done. A few more years of ditching the PO's, converting stores, and ironing out supply issues & MCLS is going to be a very different beast IMO.

Greg Lawless of Shore Capital commented on the results "McColl's still has much to do to get back on track following a challenging 2018, after the business posted slight revenue growth in the first half of the year."

Aleman - yes as you say, for summer and in our sub-sector, bottled water, other drinks and ice cream, all very high margin, are additive spend. Simply more people outside more of the time is multiplicative. Presumably in conventional grocery processed barbecue food such as burger and sausages are also likely to move more in convenience than they otherwise would.

I shop mostly at Sainbury. It's problems are largely of its own making. It loses £5+ of sales to me every week for being out of stock and that means I do top-up shops elsewhere and now occasionally try do full shops elsewhere. It's been going on since around Christmas. Until they sort it out, they'll remain in trouble.

As for weather, people buy lots more drink when its hot. It adds greatly to profitability of you are on thin margins and fixed overheads. There have been profit warnings from AG Barr and Fevertree because drink sales are low so far this year after a great year last time. You can also throw in extra sales of ice cream and from salad, fruit and bread that go off quickly in hot conditions. It's got little to do with what's in stock and everything lots do with top-up shops, impulse purchases and spoilage that relate to hot weather. MCLS should be doing really well this week. It's currently 32C in the house as I type and we're running out of salad, juice, pop and beer rapidly this week. A top up shop is on the way.

I am always reminded of Sainbury's TU clothing, just brought in their summer range when a lady entered there most northerly store looking for winter clothing, saying "we've still got snow outside, what on earth are Sainsbury's stocking their summer clothing for."

I think you're missing the point slightly on the weather tbh logan.

The fact is that they do exceptionally well when the sun shines and everyone charges in to buy beer and burgers for the barbie.

When the weather is 'ordinary' so are their sales. The weather in H1 this year did not match H1 last year, so it's just a comparative thing.

All imho of course.

Saying poor weather has caused difficult trading suggests to me, the CEO is saying we have the wrong mix of products in our shops - this has always been a major problem of national chains.

One part of the UK can be sunny and 33C, while at the same time another part of the UK can be cloudy and 18C.
