That was a good outcome.
Personally I am not convinced that the estate has a value anywhere near book.
The newer food led pubs need some refub now, and that doesn't come cheap, as some of them have been around for a while.
The breweries are profitable, but they have stiff competition fir some of the products.

That having been said, management that could actually operate a business properly might help a lot.

Funnily enough, red, the debt might be an attraction to certain bidders. I've come fresh from the takeover of EIG (money banked 18/3 - Phew!) and thought the same thing there, but in a world where there is oodles of cash available and nil or even negative interest rates, refinancing the debt gives an immediate cash boost to the business. What's MARS' blended interest rate? 7%? Besides shares, I also held a slug of EIG 6.375% corporate bonds not due to mature until 2031 and although the takeover documents said nothing about the bonds, they were redeemed without a by-your-leave immediately upon completion.

Indeed, and with regard to a potential takeover:
How much of the £1.4bn of debt on the balance sheet would they be interested in?
It hasn't budged more than 50p in at least 5 years.
might need a good discount to take it off shareholders hands.

Pubs closed, no rents coming in, no on-sales beer being sold.......

I don't think there'll be much cash washing around for debt reduction!

I'm quite happy they aren't paying the dividend....they should be reducing the massive debt with the cash.

City Pub (cpc) announce open offer and placing at 50p to raise funds to get through this period and if appropriate buy more pubs at attractive prices, shares now trading at 60p. I previously bought a relatively small amount at .45p but I think we all need to be cautious in the current market

pub/brewery sector doing well today

(although, for recent days, +6% or +13% feels almost like no price rise at all !! je je)

Mitchells & Butler + 13%
Wetherspoon + 6%
City Pub Group +14%
Whitbread +5%

----

update
some of these lost much of those gains during the afternoon

MARS didnt fell 10% over the day, but it was the biggest riser in previous days so to give some back is not too surprising

virus update
Spain
4 days in a row & the number of deaths is bouncing around the 4 day average

that curve seems to have flattened off
& hence the mood & atmosphere will probably change & Spain will probably start thinking about the future

the UK is further back in the process than Spain. (10 days ?)
