A third of households now buy their food shopping at Marks & Spencer as its turnaround gathers pace.

In a vote of confidence for boss Stuart Machin, research group NIQ said 33 per cent of households shopped at M&S for food and drink in the 12 weeks to October 5.

M&S now holds the same share of the market as rival Waitrose.

A year ago, Marks accounted for 3.4 per cent of grocery spending, while Waitrose was on 3.8 per cent.

Both are now on 3.7 per cent, NIQ said. This is another sign that Machin’s strategy is paying off after investing in larger food halls and launching new products.

It is benefiting from more shoppers doing their weekly shop with them as opposed to being seen as a retailer for treats.

Some 800,000 customers have been enticed through its doors over the past four weeks as retailers gear up for their peak trading time ahead of Christmas.

So PAUL designed a jacket with a marble design top section !

Paul deserved to fail for not listening to the brief notwithstanding an awful jacket.

I am not certain the programme has done Marks any good.

I've just been looking at this share. Anyone noticed the continual dilution of value by the continuos share awards? It's ridiculous. Is it going to continue? The annual dilution to employees etc.. negates the whole dividend by a factor greater than 2!

However Daylon excelled with his sportswear which the presenters said listened to the brief.

Maria didn't listen to the brief and had to leave the process.

The presenter who does a lot of shouting about is most annoying to me.

"Figures from Kantar, seen by The Telegraph, show M&S’s sales rose by 12.4pc in September, outpacing the rest of the industry."

"Waitrose, which is viewed as M&S’s closest rival, grew by 1.9pc over the same period, while M&S also outpaced major players including Lidl, Aldi, Tesco and Sainsbury’s."

"Clive Black, an analyst at Shore Capital, said: “M&S is really motoring at the moment. It’s travelling at a much faster trajectory than Waitrose.”

He said this success was driven by people doing more of their weekly shop at M&S, rather than buying just a few bits on the commute home from work."

Plans for new M&S store at Gateway Retail Park in Weymouth take step forward


Plans for a new Marks and Spencer (M&S) store in Dorset have been welcomed by councillors who voted unanimously in favour of the proposals.

The new building at the Gateway Retail Park will be double the size of the seafront M&S, which is likely to close in 2027.

It is expected 45 new jobs will be created by the development, adding to the 340 already at The Gateway.

Fifty additional jobs will also be created during the construction phase.
