Plans to create a new Marks and Spencer (M&S) store in Hull have been submitted, six years after the closure of a similar shop in the city centre.
The 61,000-sq ft (5,659-sq m) food, home and clothing store, at Kingswood Retail Park, would create 43 jobs, according to the proposal.
At present, the retailer operates a food store at Kingswood, but the applicant said it was "too small to meet M&S's business model requirements".
Councillor Mike Ross, the leader of Hull City Council, welcomed the announcement, saying the proposal was a "massive sign of confidence" in the local economy.
The application has been submitted by Burnett Planning on behalf of Legal & General Assurance (Pensions Management) Limited, the owner of the retail park. |
Ocado, M&S and Aldi all saw strong sales growth in the 12 weeks to 23 February, while Asda once again found itself struggling to keep up with its rivals, according to new data from analyst Kantar.
Figures from Kantar’s Total Till Roll showed Ocado was the fastest-growing retailer for the tenth consecutive month, with sales increasing by 9.6%. The figures mean the online supermarket held its share of the market at 1.9%.
M&S also showed new gains, with grocery sales climbing by 12.2% across its bricks-and-mortar stores. |

Not sure about the London red bit. |
ccc,
Not always correct but the term is "profit warning comes in threes just like London Red Busses !" |
I think I read somewhere that when a company gives a profit warning. They on average give three profit warnings. So maybe expect more bad news from them in the coming year. |

UK retail sales topped expectations at the start of the year, numbers from the Office for National Statistics showed.
Retail sales volumes surged by 1.7% in January from December, well-ahead of the FXStreet cited consensus of 0.3%. In December, retail sales had fallen 0.6%, the reading downwardly revised from a 0.3% fall.
On an annual basis, retail sales rose 1.0% last month, easing from a 2.8% rise in December. Growth of 0.6% was expected for January, so the latest reading topped consensus.
"However, there was a decline in non-food store sales volumes, which fell by 1.3% over the month. There was also a fall in the amount spent online, by 1.7%. This comes as no surprise following the inflation figures of 3% that were seen last week. It further highlights the lack of spending power consumers currently have, as they act more cautiously with buying non-essential goods," Trade Nation analyst David Morrison said. |
