John Redwood@johnredwoodThe main UK supermarkets are not profiteering. They are competing strongly. We need to grow more food and stop paying farmers to take more land out of production.6:00 am · 28 Jun 2023

MKS OCDO = 50% OCADO UK

Encouragingly, Tom Slater of Baillie Gifford, and manager of the Scottish Mortgage investment trust, is supportive. “We believe that Ocado is very early in addressing a very big market opportunity and it would be a dreadful shame if the UK were to lose one of its leading listed technology companies when there is so much potential remaining,” he says. That’s the spirit. Amazon is not needed.

LIDL wins injunction to stop TESCO from using it's similar "clubcard" logo, which won't be implimented immediately to allow TESCO to appeal against the previous hearing

The amusing thing is LILD and ALDI copy as close as possible it's competitors brands to confuse customers in going for it's own brands at cheaper prices.

Normal low rates on BoE rates cycle is 5%.
Post 2008 rates went below 5% which is very unusual.
IMO we are likely to be going back to normal and 5% will be the decade average.
That is why most fixed rate mortgages will be paying a lot more for a long time.

Rate rises strengthens the pound which reduces the cost of imported goods.
The £ fell 20% vs the $ between June 21 and September 23 at a time when goods inflation was also rampant in $.
Goods ordered in 09/22 from China are now on the shelves in our shops
The £ is now nearly 20% stronger than 09/22.
So if you ordered the same item today the delivered price would be 20% lower just on exchange rates. Other costs like freight and commodities have also fallen over the last year.

The hope has to be that import goods deflation over the next year balances the service sector inflation which will bring the RPI down to 2-4%

One problem is such a high percentage of mortgages are on fixed rates. For all these people the interest rate rise has no affect yet. There needs to be other ways to lower inflation. Rate rises were started too late and won't have an affect until fixed rates start to come to an end.

The UK's largest dairy cooperative has said there could be further increases in the price of milk and other dairy products if the government does not urgently tackle labour shortages in farming. The lack of workers is fuelling food price inflation, Arla said, warning that without action this could also lead to a crisis in milk production.Staff shortages are just the latest challenge facing dairy farmers, the cooperative said, following the outbreak of war in Ukraine, which has pushed up the cost of producing milk to record levels. Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed the price of dairy products rising steeply in May, with low-fat milk climbing by 28.5% in a year, butter by 14.1% and the price of cheese and curd increasing by 33.4%..... I was feeling quite smug having bought a small amount of Ocado at 397 and selling it at 510 this morning. An hour later it was 610.

Highly shorted stocks and stories in the Times go hand in hand. Earlier this month it was ASOS.

Ocado's share price has surged amid reports that Amazon could be lining up a potential bid for the owner of the online grocery store. Shares in Ocado Group spiked by around 40pc on Thursday after claims emerged that Jeff Bezos's online empire had taken an interest in the technology and grocery business.  The Times said Amazon and a number of other "heavyweights" in the tech sector were thought to be mulling bids around the level of 800p per share. Ocado is currently trading at 566p a share. Both Ocado and Amazon declined to comment. A deal to acquire Ocado would give Amazon a further foothold in the UK supermarket sector. ...
