Yes I read about Odey, the company now being broken up but Crispin has circa £450 million or so in his investments so he won't need to go to a food bank !

bigbigdave, I dont think Tesco trading myself will do much for MARKS I tend to think MARKS is doing all the right things at the moment hence close to my target price of £2.

Trust in both Tesco and Sainsburys at a 9 year low, customers feel like they are being ripped off as prices continue to rise and it seems customers are more concerned in relation to the smaller convenience stores according to "Which"...

Both supermarkets argue their prices have to be higher as it costs more money to support the smaller hubs however the feeling is customers feel like they are being "ripped off" through convenience.

Both supermarkets not given a breakdown on their cost based/overheads compared to their larger supermarkets so you cannot blame customers for thinking as they do. I supect the smaller hubs are making more money as the other supermarkets are expanding into smaller hubs. An example of this is ASDA looking to expand their food offering into larger food outlets in their fuel outlets.

Frasers group did well to manage to acquire a 19% stake in AO world buying the stock from Odey and at such a good price. Had he tried to buy 19% through the market it would probably pushed the share price up. Frasers hold a stake in many fashion companies.

Bond market reversed and Mks did not have a ‘fire sale’. The Mks published their annual report this week just gone which states the pension is in surplus.

Frankly this is really very old news and effected most of not all pension funds at the time. The article fails to mention the reversal of the bonds market which is now hot!

Bill Hardy4 DAYS AGOReply to Steve McClellan - view messageMessage ActionsI'm not sure what all the fuss is about when it comes to chlorination. This method of cleaning chicken has been shown to eradicate salmonella, campylobacter and other harmful bacteria. The argument is frequently put that this is a symptom of poor hygiene and low animal welfare conditions, but it is a most specious argument to suppose that the use of chlorination means poor practices.REPLY1 REPLY 11 0FLAGSMSteve McClellan4 DAYS AGOReply to Bill HardyMessage ActionsI know of that argument, and I lived in the US for 8 years and survived! But that's not the point. We have high food standards and both our own food industry and that of the exporters to the UK should have to meet those standards.REPLY2 REPLIES 2 0FLAGBHBill Hardy4 DAYS AGOReply to Steve McClellanMessage ActionsWe have to be careful to navigate a path between standards that are too lenient and conversely too onerous. Judging by your comments about your time in the US, you were lucky to have survived the ordeal. Or just possibly, their standards are more than adequate for the public / consumers to be happy with their lot.REPLY1 REPLY 4 0FLAGRCRichard Chamberlain4 DAYS AGOReply to Steve McClellanMessage ActionsBut don't you wonder why they die much earlier than Europeans or the more developed Asian countries.REPLY2 REPLIES 2 1FLAGSMSteve McClellan4 DAYS AGOReply to Bill HardyMessage ActionsThen folk should lobby for our own food standards to be made just 'adequate' to provide our farmers a level playing field. And it's hard to stop salivating at the prospect of allowing up to 30 insect fragments in a 100g jar of peanut butter; as well as 11 rodent hairs in a 25g container of paprika; or 3mg of mammalian excreta (typically rat or mouse excrement) per each pound of ginger. Yumm, can't wait.REPLY 1 0FLAGBHBill Hardy4 DAYS AGOReply to Richard ChamberlainMessage ActionsAnd you attribute their early demise to eating bad chicken rather than perhaps eating too much of it?REPLY 4 0FLAGSMSteve McClellan4 DAYS AGOReply to Richard ChamberlainMessage ActionsIndeed Richard, they have much higher levels of food poisoning, but some of that could be to do with food prep.REPLY1 REPLY 0 0FLAGBHBill Hardy4 DAYS AGOReply to Steve McClellanMessage ActionsBefore we get sucked too far down the rabbit hole, the argument was about whether chlorinating chicken, or even salads (as is routinely done in the EU) is an unacceptable thing to do. Lobby groups would have us all believe that chlorinating chicken is intrinsically unacceptable, whilst others (mainly consumers) are beginning are realising increasingly that this is just brazen protectionism.... Retailers being hammered today...

Retail sales fall for first time in two years - BDO

The cost of living crisis is hurting the high street, figures from business advisory firm, BDO showed today.

Total like-for-like retail sales in the four weeks to May 28, combining in-store and online, fell by 1.5% overall compared with last May, turning negative for the first time in more than two years.

Online sales fell by 3.3%, one of the lowest results recorded outside of the pandemic, while in-store sales rose by just 1% across the month.

Total LFL sales were negative in three out of four weeks in May, with low and negative sales across all categories and channels.

BDO suggested the month’s three public holiday weekends may have contributed to reduced spending, as consumers potentially prioritized holiday or experiential spending over retail shopping.

Sticky inflation may have also played a part, the survey reported.

Footfall growth was positive throughout May, exceeding +3.0% growth in every week except for week two, which was possibly affected by festivities marking the Coronation of King Charles III, BDO reported.
