Numis Upgrades Marks & Spencer to Add From Hold, Boosts PT

Jefferies believes M&S may have clinched FTSE 100 re-entry


Marks & Spencer (MKS) could be heading back into the FTSE 100 thanks to operational progress and a strong retail backdrop, says Jefferies.

Analyst James Grzinic retained his ‘hold’ recommendation and target price of 180p on the Citywire Elite Company, which gained 7.4%, or 15p, to 220p on Tuesday.

An unscheduled trading update and new profit guidance issued by the group confirmed ‘a strong trading backdrop for UK retail as a whole, together with ongoing market share gains for the group in both food and clothing’, Grzinic explained.

‘Investors likely anticipated, at least partly, this upbeat statement, which is consistent with strong industry data,’ he said.

‘Still, the progress made by the group in both categories is rather impressive and may well clinch FTSE 100 status for the group.’

Marks & Spencer is on track to re-enter the FTSE 100 after shares jumped to a 19-month high as it revealed turnaround efforts were paying off. The retailer said it expects to post increased profits this year, having previously forecast a decline, pushing shares up as much as 9pc on Tuesday.It said its interim results would be a "significant improvement against previous expectations".The jump in its stock puts M&S on course to be promoted into the blue-chip index in the next reshuffle, after its market capitalisation surpassed £4.3bn. ... ...Following its changes to forecasts, Shore Capital said the stock is trading on 11 times forward earnings.
