John Redwood@johnredwoodGlad the government is removing quota limits from small UK fishing boats. They also need to ban the over 100 metres industrial foreign trawlers that are being allowed to hoover up too much of our fish, damaging our fishing grounds.6:01 am · 18 Jul 2023·

UK online supermarket Ocado held annual guidance after swinging to a core profit in its first half and said its retail earnings would be "marginally positive" for the full year. The company on Tuesday posted a core profit of £16.6m compared with a loss of £13.6m a year earlier. Shares in the firm spiked last month on rumours of a possible bid from online giant Amazon.

7:38AMOcado losses deepen as it fights to cut costsOcado suffered deeper losses in the first half of the year as the company stepped up efforts to improve its online grocery joint venture with Marks & Spencer.  The company reported a pretax loss of £289.5m in the 26 weeks to May 28, down 37pc on the previous year, although its project with M&S returned to profit in the second quarter as shoppers were lured by price cuts. Most of Ocado's revenues come from its online grocery business with M&S, which has been struggling to boost market share as shoppers shift away to discount supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl to save money.Ocado has been keeping a lid on costs at the venture and boosting efficiency, having announced it will close its oldest warehouse in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Ocado shares have lost two-thirds of their value over the past two years, having last made a pretax profit seven years ago.... Great new m&s ad on the box today. One of those where you wonder what is being advertised, then at the end you find out it's m&s's healthy snack/food range. Seems to hit the spot.

A race to 'rewild' Britain by ministers is putting food security at risk, farmers have said.Landowners fear that the Government is too focused on restoring agricultural land to its natural state as part of a push to hit net zero, without considering the impact on crops and livestock.Around 84pc of rural businesses said the Government's focus on food security is too weak, according to a report by Knight Frank.Tom Heathcote, head of agricultural consultancy at the business, said: "Farmers believe land should be allocated for agricultural use rather than for rewilding or less intensive farming practices."The Ukraine war and climate change have put pressure on farmers to produce more food as shelves empty out, with sunflower oil and wheat particularly badly affected by the invasion. There was also a shortage of tomatoes earlier this year, after bad weather spells in Morocco and Spain left importers struggling to find them.... The stated aim of the business, announced at the end of last year, is increasing the rate of retention among customers. CEO Hannah Gibson said at the time that they wanted to build on what they had, which is the “strongest loyalty in market”, she claimed, by “driving marketing efficiencies to improve targeting and retention of customers”. This is one way it hopes to inch towards “marginal” profitability in 2023 and reverse the £500m annual loss reported in February.

CT: cost cutting protecting M&S margins

Columbia Threadneedle’s Jeremy Smith believes Marks & Spencer (MKS) can protect margins with its cost-saving measures.

Smith holds the high-street stalwart, which is a Citywire Elite Companies plus-rated business, in his £158m CT UK Equity Alpha Income fund. In a recent update he said the group had ‘benefited from a strong results statement, with the company reporting increased profit and committing to reintroducing its dividend for the first time since the pandemic.’

‘Management credited this performance to its strategy of reshaping and modernising the business, along with strong sales of clothing, homeware and food,’ Smith said.

‘We are also optimistic about the firm’s cost-saving measures to protect margins.’

More generally, Smith was positive about the prospects for the UK consumer and companies. He said recent falls in energy prices have ‘abated concerns about the cost-of-living crisis.’

‘Meanwhile, corporates remain positive, as reflected in the high level of M&A interest in UK companies,’ he said.

‘Overseas bidders and private equity firms have also been attracted by the UK market’s deeply discounted valuations relative to global peers. The UK is home to world-leading businesses with favourable prospects – many of which are trading at distressed levels.’
