28/1/2023 14:26 | SIR I was brought up in a mining village in the North East with no heating, no hot water and an outdoor lavatory. The whole village voted Labour. From an early age I knew that I wanted to have a different life and start a business. As soon as I was able, I voted Conservative because I believed that this party supported aspiration and entrepreneurship. My business was successful and I retired at 55. Now 79, I find that my savings and pension funds are fast depleting as a result of Conservative ineptitude. Even allowing for the challenges of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, this Government has performed abysmally, with its lies, waste and lack of a coherent plan.I have no idea who I will vote for at the next election but unless by some miracle the Conservatives change their attitudes, it will not be for them.D?M TurnbullNewton Aycliffe, Co Durham... 27/1/2023 21:01 | Thinking about the latest topic, tank battles. Researching a proper talk battle in WW2 not this latest minor scuffle in Ukraine. The battle at Kursk 5 Jul 1943 - 23 Aug 1943. The winner was Russia who recaptured territory over a 1200 mile front, and was the beginning of the end for the Germans. Numbers; Russian causalities 860,000 Tanks lost 1500. German causalities 200,000. Tanks lost. 500. Beginning to think these latest tanks offered to Ukraine are not that significant, they can be so easily destroyed from the air these days, always assuming you have air superiority. The problem in the gulf war in Iraq was that the pilots of the tank buster aircraft armed with missiles argued with each other, 'I saw it first'...it was a Turkey shoot. | careful

27/1/2023 20:24 | Watch the green comet next Wednesday... A once-in-a-lifetime comet could be visible with the naked eye as it lights up the night sky next Wednesday. Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF), or the "green comet", was last visible from earth during the Stone Age and won't be visible again for an estimated 50,000 years. It made its closest approach to the sun on 12 January, and will have its closest approach to Earth on 1 February. What is Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF)? The comet was discovered within Jupiter's orbit by astronomers at the Zwicky Transient Facility in California in March 2022. At the moment, it resembles a "fuzzy green ball in the sky". The comet emits a green glow due to UV radiation lighting up the gases streaming off the comet's surface, the Royal Observatory says. The celestial body has continued to grow brighter throughout January. | diku
