12/5/2021 12:03 | Unions are entirely to blame, no question about it. | utrickytrees
12/5/2021 12:02 | The relevant chapter in Mrs Thatcher's memoirs was called "Mr Scargill's Insurrection." Is that a reasonable description? Well, if you were leader of the ice cream vendors union, would you call a strike for October? When you might be on strike for 6 months before anyone even noticed? Of course not - so why would a miners strike be called for the Spring? | grahamite2
12/5/2021 11:59 | Unions can be a problem but they are not the reason why UK engineering is a shadow of what it was. Demographics haven't helped but our government has sat and watched this happen for decades and done nothing about it. Our electronics/gaming industry is a success story but if you look at its roots many designers and programmers learned their trade on the BBC micro. Many companies and current architectures stem from Acorn who made it and most of the SW corridor of AI firms etc.. can have links back to a company called Inmos which was funded by a Labour government to the tune of £100M. These are facts. They are not made up. | minerve 2
12/5/2021 11:50 | Met an ex coal mining union rep a few years ago. He was with Scargill when he got arrested, so he said. He said the police were totally responsible for the violence from the peaceful protest. When I asked him why the police would goad, beat up and otherwise provoke a response, he said police had been draughted in from all over the north, and they all wanted lots of overtime. When I asked why they stopped cegb workers getting to their jobs, he denied they did. My brother was one who tried to go to work, but really feared for his life when stopped by the rabid pickets. He thinks he was lucky being left to turn around and leg it.Unions are pkish when they do what they're supposed to, but usually they don't. | pierre oreilly
12/5/2021 11:46 | Do wake up. Rolls Royce makes more than just aero engines. | minerve 2
12/5/2021 11:43 | Utricky I don't know the exact number but what I say happens all the time. If you were something more than a twig cutter you would understand how international business and trade works. | minerve 2
12/5/2021 11:39 | They don't make fkin paperclips at RR do they? There are very few places in the world where the workforce is capable of making aero engines that's why salaries are on parity with the UK. You know fkall lol. | utrickytrees
12/5/2021 11:08 | Unions protect union leaders' rights. They have been of very questionable benefit to the average member. | grahamite2
12/5/2021 11:06 | You need to learn more about RR. It so happens that many of these contracts Rolls Royce sign have clauses in them that stipulate some/all of the build happen in the countries of the clients. These countries want to empower their knowledge bases and engineering sectors so in the future they depend less on the likes of the UK for such products and services. Nothing to do with the unions. | minerve 2
12/5/2021 11:02 | So unions are to blame because they happen to protect UK workers' rights? | minerve 2
12/5/2021 10:53 | Pierre Oreilly11 May '21 - 21:41 - 338988 of 339009 So in an attempt to extend some very old or very ill people's last 3 months of life, which weren't likely to be a bag of laughs anyhow, we have sentenced many cancer patients to death, made many commit suicide, given most of the population a really miserable 18 months and wrecked the economy. Those suffering most, the young, fit and able, weren't affected by covid anyhow. Just one thing I'd add to this excellent summary: we have trashed civil liberties built up over 700 years. | grahamite2
12/5/2021 10:49 | Utricky The discussion was about British engineering. The cancer that has been killing it has been around for decades. That is why I said UK governments, not just the Tories. I didn't even mention nationalisation. | minerve 2
12/5/2021 10:44 | Examples of what? | minerve 2
12/5/2021 10:41 | A bit of both. Yes, basically egos greedy for power. | minerve 2
12/5/2021 10:41 | Example Merv? | utrickytrees
12/5/2021 10:40 | minny absolutely its the governments fault - cant put the finger on any particular one though - take your pick - union obsession with restrictive practices or tory obsession with open market - or rather open season on the uk industrial sector | scruff1
12/5/2021 10:36 | Scruff Most likely the Tory plan is to do away with primary healthcare in the form of a GP as much as they can. You'll talk to a computer who will help you decide whether you have a brain tumour or a headache. LOL! | minerve 2 |
