New Israeli Covid drug which cured 30 cases of disease hailed by scientists as 'huge breakthrough'

Dominic Penna

A new coronavirus drug which successfully cured 30 cases of the disease in Israeli hospital patients has been hailed by scientists as a ‘huge breakthrough’.

The EXO-CD24 substance was developed at the Ichilov Medical Centre in Tel Aviv and successfully completed its first phase of clinical trials on Friday.

The treatment was given to 30 patients with coronavirus, whose conditions ranged from moderate to severe.

Twenty-nine of the patients were then discharged from the hospital in the following three to five days, while one patient took slightly longer to recover.

A protein known as CD24 is delivered to the lungs by exosomes in the drug, which helps to rebalance the immune system and prevent it from overreacting to the virus.

Professor Nadir Arber originally designed EXO-CD24, which is breathed in as a gas and taken once every five days, in order to treat patients who had ovarian cancer.

“Even if the vaccines do their job, and even if there aren't any new mutations, one way or another, the coronavirus will be staying with us,” Prof Arber told the news site Arutz Sheva.

“That’s why we developed this special medication. It’s been about half a year from the time the idea was hatched to the first human trials [being] conducted.”

Roni Gamzu, the director of the Ichilov Medical Centre, said that the research during phase one of the trial was “advanced and sophisticated and may save coronavirus patients”.

Speaking to the Times of Israel, he said: “The results of the phase one trials are excellent, and all give us confidence in the method Arber has been researching in his lab for many years.”

No placebo was used in the first stage of the trial, and the next phase of the clinical trials will continue to examine the effects and efficacy of the treatment.

The drug Allocetra, which has been developed at the Hadassah Medical Centre, has also reported promising results in the second stage of its clinical trial.

Israel announced yesterday that it will ease lockdown restrictions but keep its borders closed after a drop in its number of coronavirus cases.

EU in near complete chaos.

"(IDS) called out the EU after the bloc's foreign affairs chief, Josep Borrell, held a joint press conference with Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov.

During the press conference, Mr Borrell congratulated Russia for its Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine, which was approved by Moscow in August last year WITHOUT CLINICAL TRIALS.

It comes as EU leaders condemned Russia for arresting Alexei Navalny, opposition politician and campaigner, and before the European drugs authority approved Sputnik V.

Mr Borrell praised Russia for developing Sputnik V and welcomed the new jab.

He said: "I take the floor to just congratulate Russia for this success.

"It's good news for the whole mankind because it means we are going to have more tools to face the pandemic."

He added: "Now I am hoping that the European Medical Agency will be able to certify the efficiency of this vaccine in order to be used also in European Union Member States.

"It would be good news, because, as you know, we are facing a shortage of vaccines and if there is another source of supply, [it would be] welcomed."

(IDS) said: "This is an example of the EU kissing the backside of Russia."

An EU diplomat said: "It was not a good performance by Mr Borrell. He was unprepared."

Strikes me the whole of the EU is continually 'unprepared'. EU Army, anyone?

Temporary 'booze ban' being considered as part of Government's roadmap for lifting lockdown

Pubs and restaurants could reopen as soon as April if they agree not to sell alcohol under options being discussed to allow the widespread relaxation of coronavirus restrictions after Easter.

The Telegraph can disclose that a temporary "booze ban" is being considered as part of the Government's roadmap for lifting lockdown, which will be unveiled on Feb 22.

It is understood the move is being discussed to allay concerns from Prof Chris Whitty, the chief medical officer, and others about the effect of drinking on social distancing.

Under the three-stage plan for lifting restrictions, some outdoor socialising is expected to be allowed in March and schools are set to return.

It is hoped that hospitality can then reopen in April and that all of the most vulnerable will be vaccinated by May, in time for the local elections.

With almost 11 million people now vaccinated and deaths, hospitalisations and infections all falling, the Government is under increasing pressure to explain how and when the restrictions will start to be lifted.
