LauraK tweet: And the No 10 version - unless the EU budges, we're drifting towards no deal “The PM underlined the negotiations were now in a serious situation. Time was very short and it now looked very likely that agreement would not be reached unless the EU position changed substantially." unquote | polar fox
17/12/2020 20:22 | Live Brexit latest news: Boris Johnson tells Ursula von der Leyen no-deal 'very likely' unless EU backs down on fisheries Amy Jones, political correspondent Catherine Neilan, politics live editor 17 DECEMBER 2020 • 8:13PM Boris Johnson has told Ursula von der Leyen that negotiations are "in a serious situation" and no-deal is "very likely", unless Brussels backs down on fishing demands. In a phone call this evening, the Prime Minister told the European Commission President that the bloc's position on fisheries was "simply not reasonable". A Downing Street spokesman said that Mr Johnson stressed that the UK had made "every effort to accommodate reasonable EU requests on the level playing field". However, on fisheries he insisted that the UK "could not accept a situation where it was the only sovereign country in the world not to be able to control access to its own waters for an extended period and to be faced with fisheries quotas which hugely disadvantaged its own industry". "The EU’s position in this area was simply not reasonable and if there was to be an agreement it needed to shift significantly," the spokesman said. The European Commission President hailed "substantial progress" in Brexit negotiations but admitted big differences "remain to be bridged" on fisheries. | maxk

17/12/2020 19:57 | Live Brexit latest news: Ursula von der Leyen hails 'substantial progress' in Brexit negotiations after call with Boris Johnson Ursula von der Leyen has hailed "substantial progress" in Brexit negotiations, after a phone call with Boris Johnson this evening. The European Commission President said that big differences "remain to be bridged", particularly on fisheries. Downing Street earlier downplayed the chances of a breakthrough, suggesting it would only be a "stock take" rather than a path to a deal. Negotiations between the UK and EU continued this week after they were given the green light following a meeting between Mr Johnson and Mrs von der Leyen last Wednesday. Despite days of talks, Michael Gove - the Cabinet Office Minister - said on Thursday that the chances of an agreement remained "less than 50 per cent". He told the Commons Brexit Committee the "most likely outcome" was that the current transition period would end on Dec 31 without a deal. "I think, regrettably, the chances are more likely that we won't secure an agreement. So at the moment less than 50%," Mr Gove said. He also said the Government will not seek to negotiate a fresh trade agreement with the EU next year if they cannot reach a deal before the end of the Brexit transition period. | maxk
