03/11/2020 14:13 | In today's brief: Fisheries agreement said to be on basis of zonal attachment raising fears of sell-out fisheries deal. Meanwhile, China steps up trade war with Australia and Macron says Europe will stand up to terrorism.Fisheries agreement to be on basis of zonal attachment: EU negotiators have conceded a major British demand on fisheries it was reported on Monday. Brussels was said to have accepted a UK demand for future fishing opportunities to be calculated on the basis of zonal attachment. Under a zonal attachment system, British fisherman will be entitled to a larger catch than they currently are under the EU's Common Fisheries Policy, with catch quotas being based on the waters the fish are in. The Sun is reporting that Michel Barnier conceded it would be based on new scientific criteria that could see UK quotas double. Although the final decision on the exact numbers both sides can land will not be thrashed out until after the trade deal is struck. This move would neutralise threats that Macron has made in recent weeks, threatening to scupper the talks in their entirety, but is not exactly the "taking back control of our waters" that was promised. Eyes will be on Boris and the British negotiating team, as those coastal towns that lent their votes in December last year wait to see if they have been repaid with a sell-out deal. EU diplomats react: Fishing rights have long been a major obstacle to the negotiations and the Telegraph notes that reports of the EU caving on zonal attachment are not going down well in Brussels. EU diplomatic sources warned that a compromise would not fly. Other EU sources suggested the report was "far off the mark" and warned that fishing was still very much an open issue before the weekend."They can't sell a deal to their voters that doesn't include tangible prospects for their fisherman. Unless the fishermen can be told what they will be allowed to catch, there won't be a deal," one diplomat said. A UK government spokesman said that "We're not commenting on ongoing negotiations, but our position on fisheries has been clear from the start," going on to call for a Norway-style fishing agreement. The Telegraph also notes that the potential compromise will only hold if an agreement can be found in other areas such as the deal's enforcement and the "level playing field" guarantees. Brexit talks will continue in Brussels until Wednesday. Michel Barnier is expected to brief EU ambassadors tomorrow on the state of talks. China bans seven more Australian goods: China has stepped up its trade war with Australia banning seven more Aussie goods including coal, wine and timber. At the weekend, Chinese customs put the pinch on a shipment of lobsters and have continued to target Australian exports with tensions between Beijing and Canberra still high due to the pandemic. All Chinese companies have been informally instructed by the Communist Party to stop buying Australian barley, sugar, red wine, logs, coal, lobster and copper from Friday. That means any of these products that arrive after Friday will not be cleared by customs, as China looks to turn the screws on Australia's largest export market, worth over $150billion.China annexes part of Nepal: China has also seized more territory from Nepal just months after deadly border clashes between Chinese and Indian troops. They have annexed more than 150 hectares and have begun constructing alleged military bases. China diverted the flow of rivers that acted as a natural boundary and claimed the previously submerged territory. Boris and Macron condemn terror attack: President Macron was quick to deliver a message of support to Austria last night after the horrific terror attack in Vienna. France has also recently been targeted, sparking a war of words between the Frenchman and Turkey's President Erdo?an. Following the Vienna attack, Macron said that "Th | xxxxxy

03/11/2020 13:26 | grahamite Your attempts to create the impression that there are a decent bunch of conservatives who are principled, intelligent with the utmost integrity doesn't fool anyone. Boris and the current government encompass every 'NASTY' value the Tory party stands for. Tories voted him in for goodness sake! The leopard hasn't changed his spots. Boris is being Boris, Cummings is being Cummings, Gove is being Gove, Patel is being Patel etc.. etc.. No surprises here, just many - like you - trying to distance themselves from the blatant transparency that Boris & Co are happy to indulge in which shows true Tory values. :) | minerve 2
03/11/2020 13:08 | It is debatable whether Trump has ever won. Yeah, so he has money, or did have - big deal. But look at him, he has to fool - and lie to - the ignorants and the not-so-intelligents in order to gain following and affection, the rest he has to buy. Seems like a serial loser to me - just like Boris. | minerve 2
