Jacko you're bringing back memories now. As a student it was a joy to tinker with. Didn't know what I was doing but managed easy enough with a Haynes manual. Got as far as adjusting the timing using a light bulb and you'd know if it was right after a few miles if the end of the exhaust was a light-ish colour.
Didn't know about the diagonal tyre change though. Liked the way the fuel pump used to tick when the ignition partly switched on then slowing when the carb was ready to fire.

cheshire..the Morris 1000 engine was a mechanics dream. In my younger days while buying and selling cheap cars, I would do services for friends and family. Plugs, points, oil change, filter, adjust the tappetts and do a diagonal tyre change.

Those old cars were so easy to work on, today's cars are a different ball game. But it doesn't matter, modern cars will do a 100k miles no problem.

I must have had 5 or 6 Alfa Suds in the past, they handled great but rotted and let water in. I worked in Algeria for a time and drove a Lancia Beta Coupe over with a surf board on the roof, crazy but memorable.

Sons had a duff old Astra for years, slave cylinder gone and large crack in windscreen MOT due in Oct, no one wants it, so like he says, its only 3 years and he does work hard so a new one it is.

Enough room to sleep in the back. Saved on stop over costs if away, more to spend on ale.

This is a breath of fresh air.

Instead of everyone trying to be better than the next, it's now a battle of who owned the worst banger in history. .....

I would suggest using your credit card and buy some pricey things and pay it off right away. You may think you are a good credit risk but they dont cos you dont as such have a credit history by not using your card. That's what they go by, and remember most of applications go through automated system.

Old post office van, Morris 1000. Easy to service. Speakers in the back corners for a brilliant sound system. Happy days.

"I don't need the money"

Banks don't lend money to those who don't need it... You're regarded as a bad customer...
Banks make their money by lending it out, so if they can't lend you money or sell you anything then you're a bad customer.

The best customers are those who use the OD, credit cards etc...
That's why if you don't use a credit card for ages and it has 0 balance then the account will be closed...

That's strange, have you tried anywhere else? If you hadn't stated so, I would have said your credit rating is low.

I applied for a simple personal loan. I don't need the money but I was curious to see what my credit rating would get me just in case I found a really nice boat.
£2000...not a typo. Haven't got much of an overdraft because I've rarely needed it.
I've got a credit card which I was forced to get so I could hire a car in Spain but I can't remember the pin. Haven't used it since.

So if they won't lend much to someone like me on a personal loan how are they going to make any money?
AH HA!...I suppose it forces people to rely on their high interest credit cards?
Sneaky !

Mine was an old mazda 323. £340. The floor carpet in the front passenger area, covered a hole that exposed the ground. Dont think it would pass an MOT these days.

Car lease?
Sounds great -- but the problem is the end of lease inspection.
BMW hourly mechanic rate is hefty. If the dealership considers that the car has road tar etc - cost can be heavy.
Buy a one year old car - remember c40% depreciation in the time it takes to drive home in a new car - manage options - always ask what if i am wrong.

ps, Interesting side line. Enquired about a loan on-line from Lloyds over the week-end (thinking of buying a yacht) and was offered a miserly £2000 max ! I have one of the highest credit scores it's possible to have. I currently have no debt whatsoever or mortgage or rent to find. I have savings and a guaranteed income and have been with Lloyds since 1978.

If they are holding so tight to their funds is there potential for them to stop lending altogether? Even to each other? Which would be 2007-8 all over again and we know where that ended.

MM2..if your son is happy with the deal, then it's fine. I wouldn't say it's a good deal, I am much the believer in letting someone else take that chunky depreciation.

There are so many brand new cars stored in every vacant space in Europe, fields full of them up and down the country, there are great discounts to be had by anyone with the will to shop around. I would spend a day phoning around to get quotes, I guarantee your son could do a lot better.

The motor trade have had it good over the last few years, new car prices are ridiculously high. And don't forget, dealers are bound by contract to pay for those new cars many of them do not want to stock, name your own discount, get that £38k down to £30k or under, get cheap bank loan and save £1000's over 3 years...then he can sell the car to you, and another good deal is done.

Don't forget MM, £100pw for some hulk of metal standing a great deal of time on the drive, three days after you buy a new and the novelty soon wears off, all you have to look forward to is shelling out money you have already paid a chunk of tax on.

Your son may be wealthy enough not to bother about such things, but it is a very profligate way of having a set of wheels in the garage or driveway.

Knowing Alphorn, he will advise him to buy one of the many cheap classics around at the moment and watch it appreciate.
