Min2, I would be interested in your thoughts on Sir Simon Stevens. At Balliol the same time as Boris, though on the opposite side of politics. He spent some time as a Labour councillor in Brixton.

So when it comes to the lack of testing that most would agree has been the foremost policy weakness during this crisis, it seems that the reports that many private laboratories which could offer this service failed to have their invitations responded to. Stevens, of course, felt obliged to reject these advances as he has always held the view that the NHS should be the answer to everything medical. A policy at odds with the successful testing regimen in Germany.

In many other respects, Stevens is a fine man with a superb career and many views (on homeopathy, for example) that are worthy. But it’s when you let this political dogma get in the way of “clear action today” you are bound to make mistakes. And I cannot think of a bigger mistake anyone could have made by acting as a roadblock to more widespread and immediate testing capacity.

So, instead of retreading this moronic argument about how evil Boris is and how many nurses he has killed etc. etc. you might try looking closer to your own home. I doubt you have the adequate character to do so, however.

Ed Miliband returns to Labour frontbench five years after leading party to defeat

Sir Keir Starmer said he felt proud to have appointed a Shadow Cabinet that showcases the breadth, depth and talents of the Labour Party'

Ed Miliband has returned to the Labour frontbench five years after leading the party to defeat, as Sir Keir Starmer's new team signalled a shift away from the party’s 'soak the rich' strategy.

The former Labour leader, who led the party for five years from 2010, said he was “looking forward” to serving as shadow business, energy and industrial secretary as he said the party must “work with the Government” to help those businesses and workers who had been worst hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

It comes after this newspaper revealed in February that Mr Miliband, one of Sir Keir’s most high-profile endorsers, was being lined up for a job on the shadow frontbenches.

Meanwhile, Rebecca Long-Bailey, who spent much of her leadership campaign denying that she was a ‘continuity Corbyn’ candidate, was made shadow education secretary and Lord Falconer, a stalwart of the Tony Blair...

we will have to see with Mr Starmer, he has got a lot of Skeletons in the closet he has to hide, but can he be worse than Corbyn ? is that actually possible ? time will be the judge, but i for one cannot ever see him being electable...

Pierre and aljm - as I said, we've probably yet to see Starmer's true colours...

But, hey, he's got rid of Abbot and McDuff, and Corbyn's more or less gone, and that is just fantastically good news :).

Agree with Pierre that he's a bit of non-entity.

morning aljm and others. Agree Sir Starmer is a bit of a non entity, characterwise. That's not the b all and end all, but we've had so many staid and boring politicians for so long, we could do with more characters like Boris in politics. And more top civil servants like Cummings to really shake up the rest of the self serving civil service at the higher levels.

Morning aljm.

Kier Starmer:

Unlucky for him that the virus got in the way of his big day. I'd say that we've yet to see his true colours, but he's a breath of fresh air after Corbyn and his miserable team.
