04/2/2021 07:24 | Nigel Keegan4 Feb 2021 7:14AMWhat "strategy" is this. There is no strategy beyond a clueless prime minister who is terrified of the press and thinks he can get away with anything because the opposition is even more idiotic than the government. How Whitty can stand up with a straight face in front of a graph showing declining rates of everything and say that the R rate could be above 1 is beyond me. And while we're at it let's have some clarity on how Fergusson and his friends are calculating the R rate in the first place so it can be subjected to independent due diligence. NERVTAG sounds more like a Burmese military junta or Russian nerve agent than a scientific committee. Sinister acronyms and shadowy committees taking decisions and apparently accountable to nobody least of all the electorate. How on earth have we ended up with people like this running the country... 04/2/2021 07:06 | Trade frictions within the UKFEBRUARY 4, 2021 POST A COMMENTYesterday in Parliament I raised the issues of trade friction between the GB and Northern Ireland again in the Commons. I will post my speech when it is available.I was pleased that Michael Gove now accepts there are important issues to be sorted out and is engaged in talks with the EU, the Northern Ireland Executive and the Republic of Ireland. Maybe he can get an agreement to sort these matters. If not he will need to legislate urgently in the spirit of the EU's acceptance that Northern Ireland is fully part of the UK's single market and customs area to ensure the smooth flow of trade between GB and N0rthern Ireland. Our border officials need to know that goods destined to flow between different parts of the UK should pass as easily as between London and Surrey when it comes to excise, VAT and goods checks. The idea that there would be lots of people seeking to evade goods checks into the Republic by routing things through Northern Ireland and claiming them to be UK domestic trade is wrong. Most of the trade we are talking about is large supermarkets supplying their stores in Northern Ireland, or deliveries by Trusted traders and large hauliers who wish to keep their privileged status and good record with the authorities.I did not vote for the EU/Uk Agreement because I had worries both about N0rthern Ireland and fish which I highlighted in the debate. These remain real issues and need urgent attention to tackle them.... John Redwood | xxxxxy

03/2/2021 22:59 | Italy has gone e through the gears, from democratic revolt against the euro and the country’s pro-EU elites, all the way to the other extreme of a technocrat government under the ultimate Mr Euro, without any election along the way. The stitch-up has been breath-taking, even for those who thought they had seen it all in Italy. The appointment of Mario Draghi to navigate the dangerous economic waters of the next two years is astute - in one sense - but those in EU circles and the bond markets celebrating this insider riconquista should be careful what they wish for. The last usable card has been played in Italy’s misadventure with monetary union, a regime that has led to two lost decades of perma-slump, overseen 50pc youth unemployment rates across the Mezzogiorno, and culminated in a debt-deflation trap. It had better work. Three years ago, Italian voters rebelled against this regime. Insurgent parties of Left and Right swept into power, vowing to defy EU fiscal rules and to reverse reforms imposed upon them (indirectly) by Berlin. A ‘mini-Bot&rsqu | jl5006

03/2/2021 20:13 | Somehow the people surrounding the "president" feel untouchable and act out of control.. well what you expect when the president is a sleeping mode 24 hours. So back to the big Q.Who is in control of the white house? | k38
03/2/2021 19:57 | Madness.. democracy out of the window..it's getting out of control. Just wondering.. who is really the president of the United states? Surely not sleeping Joe. Black Lives Matter is supporting an effort to boot 100 Republicans from Congress on the grounds that anyone who voted to contest the Electoral College results must go.A resolution calling for investigations that could eventually lead to expulsions was introduced last month by Democratic Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri, who has aligned herself with the self-styled "squad" of House progressives. | k38
03/2/2021 19:31 | COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca confirms 100% protection against severe disease, hospitalisation and death in the primary analysis of Phase III trials. PUBLISHED 3 February 2021 07:00 GMT Increased efficacy with longer inter-dose interval Protection of over 70% starting after a first dose First indication of reduction in disease transmission of up to 67% The primary analysis of the Phase III clinical trials from the UK, Brazil and South Africa, published as a preprint in The Lancet confirmed COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca is safe and effective at preventing COVID-19, with no severe cases and no hospitalisations, more than 22 days after the first dose. Results demonstrated vaccine efficacy of 76% (CI: 59% to 86%) after a first dose, with protection maintained to the second dose. With an inter-dose interval of 12 weeks or more, vaccine efficacy increased to 82% (CI: 63%, 92%). The analysis also showed the potential for the vaccine to reduce asymptomatic transmission of the virus, based on weekly swabs obtained from volunteers in the UK trial. The data showed that PCR positive readings were reduced by 67% (CI: 49%, 78%) after a single dose, and 50% (CI: 38% to 59%) after the two dose regimen, supporting a substantial impact on transmission of the virus. The primary analysis for efficacy was based on 17,177 participants accruing 332 symptomatic cases from the Phase III UK (COV002), Brazil (COV003) and South Africa (COV005) trials led by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, a further 201 cases than previously reported. Sir Mene Pangalos, Executive Vice President BioPharmaceuticals R&D, said: “This primary analysis reconfirms that our vaccine prevents severe disease and keeps people out of hospital. In addition, extending the dosing interval not only boosts the vaccine’s efficacy, but also enables more people to be vaccinated upfront. Together with the new findings on reduced transmission, we believe this vaccine will have a real impact on the pandemic.” Professor Andrew Pollard, Chief Investigator of the Oxford Vaccine Trial, and co-author of the paper, said: “These new data provide an important verification of the interim data that has helped regulators such as the MHRA in the UK and elsewhere around the world to grant the vaccine emergency use authorisation. It also helps to support the policy recommendation made by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation for a 12-week prime-boost interval, as they look for the optimal approach to roll out, and reassures us that people are protected 22 days after a single dose of the vaccine.” Data will continue to be analysed and shared with regulators around the world to support their ongoing rolling reviews for emergency supply or conditional approval during the health crisis. AstraZeneca is also seeking Emergency Use Listing from the World Health Organization for an accelerated pathway to vaccine availability in low-income countries. The vaccine can be stored, transported and handled at normal refrigerated conditions (two-eight degrees Celsius/36-46 degrees Fahrenheit) for at least six months and administered within existing healthcare settings. AstraZeneca continues to engage with governments, international organisations and collaborators around the world to ensure broad and equitable access to the vaccine at no profit for the duration of the pandemic. COV002 COV002 is a single-blinded, multi-centre, randomised, controlled Phase II/III trial assessing the safety, efficacy and immunogenicity of AZD1222 in 12,390 participants in the UK. Trial participants to date are aged 18 years or over, who are healthy or have medically stable chronic diseases and are at increased risk for being exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Participants receive one or two intramuscular doses of a half dose (~2.5 x1010 viral particles) or full dose (~5x1010 viral particles) of AZD1222 or comparator, meningococcal vaccine MenACWY. Participants have blood samples drawn and clinical assessments for safety as well as immunogenicity at multiple timepoints up to one year post-vaccination. Suspected cases presenting with compatible symptoms were tested for virological confirmation by COVID-19 PCR. In addition, weekly swabbing are done for detection of infection and assessment of vaccine efficacy against infection. | stonedyou
