Those face masks will be cleared out from the shelves today...toilet roll mark2...

Why are they waiting 10 days to implement the wearing of face masks? If they feel it will save lives why wait 10 days. Clowns.

Graham and Freddie, have you not considered that actually we cannot keep running and hiding from this virus indefinitely. If we get a vaccine this time next year -great, but if not? Then we will be a year down the road without any nearer to a national immunity! It maybe harsh but it is probably for the greater good, that the sooner the lower risk younger people get this virus, the better. Think it has always been the aim that this spreads through the population at a pace that does not overwhelm the nhs and we shield the vulnerable. We cannot close down any longer. Too many people are dying from preventable and treatable non covid deaths. The curse of a great depression and its deprivation is greater risk than covid itself. If a vaccine never comes you will live in fear for the rest of your life unless it fizzled out due to herd immunity. New Zealand will always be on knife edge. Just think about the bigger picture before you scoff with your clown accusations

250,000 jobs to go on High Streets. 25000 jobs gone in Heathrow. Then no money left for the NHS. Masks and there will be nothing left to go out for.It will be deadly depressing. And NHS dead.

freddie, that could apply to most of the measures they've introduced, couldn't it? Time after time it's been x will happen in two weeks, y will happen in 10 days - why not "with immediate effect..."?

Clearly they're not just floundering, they have no idea at all.

This latest measure takes the biscuit though. They have been trying to recover from the damage to the economy and national life cause by their own actions, and then suddenly introduce a massive disincentive to go to any shop for any purpose.

To give everyone time to go and buy them and build up stocks in the shops? Demand for masks will go up through the roof! It also shows we are in this for a very long haul. A week here or there is nothing if we dont get a vaccine until this time next year or maybe never.

Engineered llama antibodies neutralize COVID-19 virus

Antibodies derived from llamas have been shown to neutralise the SARS-CoV-2 virus in lab tests, UK researchers announced today.

The team involves researchers from the Rosalind Franklin Institute, Oxford University, Diamond Light Source and Public Health England. They hope the antibodies -- known as nanobodies due to their small size -- could eventually be developed as a treatment for patients with severe COVID-19. The peer reviewed findings are published in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology.

Llamas, camels and alpacas naturally produce quantities of small antibodies with a simpler structure, that can be turned into nanobodies. The team engineered their new nanobodies using a collection of antibodies taken from llama blood cells. They have shown that the nanobodies bind tightly to the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, blocking it from entering human cells and stopping infection.
