24/6/2020 13:25 | For a proper Republican, look no further than Rick Perry. Also of Texas - can that be a coincidence? | grahamite2
24/6/2020 13:07 | Alphorn24 Post 308224 "I am not a Trump supporter. However, IMO he is the only person around who can really shake up things - like the international organisations. They are otherwise untouchable" Absolutely..which is why I support him. For that sole reason. I'd have preferred a proper Republican such as Ted Cruz. Even better a no nonsense Trey Gowry. | geckotheglorious
24/6/2020 12:47 | LB - "what a wonderful organisation is the WHO denying HCQ to 135 countries and causing a worldwide panic" I'm no fan of Tedros, but the WHO, minus him, is a useful, if wasteful, organisation that needs a clear-out. BUT I worry that folk like Elbee walk the streets and vote. | poikka
24/6/2020 12:13 | There have been several snippets about this lockdown etc increasing the gap between have/have nots. These staff changes will add to that. Bad news - the middle classes continue to shrink. | alphorn

24/6/2020 11:35 | Alp: Certainly I agree it is a temptation - however it could lead to much destructive strife with intransigence on both sides. Hope it could be an amicable and fair process. | bbalanjones
24/6/2020 11:11 | gbh2, well done, hope you bring your good fortune with you :-) | optomistic

24/6/2020 10:48 | The shape of things to come? . . .Entitlement? . . . Not here! The crisis in Higher Education is gathering pace at an alarming rate. Now Reading University has become the latest institution to announce a savage attack on their staff. They plan to shed 500 FTEs-worth of staff, up to 900 posts, and are threatening to achieve it by sacking everyone and rehiring them on inferior contracts. This is not about Covid. Like other managements, Reading is taking advantage of the crisis to reduce its wage bill after a period of financial mismanagement and poor decision-making. The situation is now serious and urgent. Jobs are under threat at every institution. The attack on staff at Reading is part of a pattern which will devastate Higher Education unless there is a serious national response from our union. Last week UCU branches at four universities already faced with mass job losses - SOAS, Liverpool, Roehampton and Imperial - organised a mass solidarity meeting to initiate a national fight to defend the sector and jobs. | bbalanjones

24/6/2020 10:21 | g2 : Saw that piece by Professor Peter Piot at the weekend. I already thought along the same lines. There is MUCH to learn about this virus. | bbalanjones
24/6/2020 10:17 | The sensible folk of the middle ground. . . .Hear hear!! The Guardian is the most-read quality newspaper in the UK - with a record 35.6 million for combined print and digital monthly readership. We are now the second most-read newspaper online in the UK - behind the Sun, but overtaking the Mail for the third time in the last four PAMCo data releases, as well as the Mirror. This is a significant achievement and part of an ongoing trend. We continue to be the most trusted newspaper in the UK among regular readers. Guardian readers are increasingly more loyal and more engaged - staying for longer and coming back with greater frequency. We have the largest number of daily readers cross-platform (8.8M) of any quality paper - almost double that of our nearest rivals, the Telegraph (4.2M) and the Independent (5.3M). Readers are also spending more time with Guardian journalism on average each month (31 mins) than any other quality online. Observer readers spend almost 90 minutes on average per month with the paper - the second highest rate for any Sunday newspaper Editor-in-chief Kath Viner said: “We now have a record number of people coming to the Guardian and choosing to support us financially and it's clear from this data that Guardian journalism is increasingly in demand, trusted and valued.” And some of our writers had thoughts to share with supporters too. | bbalanjones |
