10/4/2020 08:56 | A hard Frexit needn’t be a disaster for France ith European solidarity impaled on the coronavirus epidemic, talk of Frexit is surfacing again. But how could Frexit be organised? Like Britain, France would activate Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty to begin the process of leaving the European Union. But how does one leave the single currency? Brussels, which existentially regulates for everything, does not say and the 3000 page Lisbon Treaty is silent on the subject. So how could France move to ‘eurexit&rsquo would be the financial consequences? A starting point could involve reverse engineering the Lisbon Treaty’s monetary articles to begin negotiations with Brussels on exiting the euro. While the 144- article long Title VIII of the Treaty devoted to monetary policy makes no reference to a state being able to leave the single currency, it does contain five substantial articles setting out: ‘Transitional Provisions’ for member states to join the single currency. | ![]() stonedyou

09/4/2020 23:26 | The coronavirus pandemic has exposed deep divides in Europe, with EU member states arguing over how to tackle the economic fallout. Italy and Spain have accused northern nations - led by Germany and the Netherlands - of not doing enough. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has even warned that if the EU fails to come up with an ambitious plan to help member states saddled with debt by the fight against coronavirus, the bloc could "fall apart". 09/4/2020 22:22 | Somebody was spouting today about the lack of an EU rescue package. Just reported on Swiss TV is a package agreed tonight by the EU finance ministers for a 500-billion-euro ($550-billion) rescue for European countries hit hard by the coronavirus epidemic. So today there is the US package, the BofE statement, an EU package and it seems some agreement over oil production. Some firepower to attempt to support the markets next week. | ![]() alphorn
09/4/2020 22:05 | Boris Johnson's pregnant fiancée Carrie Symonds reacts to PM leaving intensive care The Prime Minister is still in St Thomas' Hospital Prime Minister Boris Johnson's fiancée Carrie Symonds has broken her silence after news emerged that he has been moved out of intensive care and back to the main ward at St Thomas' Hospital. Boris was first admitted on Sunday night – ten days after testing positive – but was moved to the ICU on Monday after struggling with his coronavirus symptoms. A relieved Carrie, who is pregnant with the couple's first child, posted a picture of a rainbow with clapping emojis following the good news, timing it for the 8pm Clap for Carers on Thursday evening. Boris is said to be in "extremely good spirits" with a No10 spokesman saying in a statement: "The Prime Minister has been moved this evening from intensive care back to the ward, where he will receive close monitoring during the early phase of his recovery. He is in extremely good spirits." He "continues to improve" after a "good night" and thanked the NHS for the "brilliant care" he has received, the spokesman added. | ![]() stonedyou
09/4/2020 21:50 | "NewKid9 Apr '20 - 14:22 - 300024 of 300050 I think we are overplaying this pandemic. Yes it is easy to get infected and yes it dose kill but if we can keep the death toll down to 20000 this would be a small percentage of the amount of deaths recorded in the UK of 600000 to 700000 last year" Really. Will you be saying that come Winter 2020 when this hits phase 2? Or how about Winter 2021 - phase 3 Am assuming you'll survive the food shortages that are incoming. Do you have a breakdown of those 600-700,000 deaths in UK last year? And in what categories? | crossing_the_rubicon
