Utrickytrees,
the someone that has to pay will be us tax payers so agree with extra VAT & tax rises on the cards

another point,

how can the whole world keep borrowing money we don't have though?

not sure how this will end can we all right it off just like 3rd world countries have done in the past? how is Italy going to pay up? etc

until we get a few answers to important questions the markets look ugly, their may be short relief as nothing goes down in a straight line,

i'll stay watching & waiting on the side lines for a good while yet.

Hhh it's the health officials that are dictating policy atm, wrapping us all up in Boris's cosy billions for rent mortgage subsidies and sick pay for all. When the dust settles the economists will get involved expect vat & tax rises. The money grab wont stop there.. the bank tax is surely round the corner, Lloyd's stuck in the doldrums for years imo.

As the world heads into lock-down in the face of Covid-19, schools across Britain and Northern Ireland close until further notice from Friday, and up to 40 Underground stations close across London as stricter social distancing measures come into play. Meanwhile, the pound sank to its lowest level against the dollar for 35 years, while the European Central Bank announced plans to buy an additional €750 billion in bonds in response to the worsening economic situation. London starts to head into lockdown: Up to 40 non-interchange stations on the London Underground network are to shut today as the UK capital prepares for further restrictions to help slow the spread of Covid-19 with a London lock-down expected to be announced from tomorrow. Bus services are also being reduced and people are urged "not to use public transport for anything other than essential journeys".10,000 troops are also on standby as a new Covid Support Force is formed to assist with the crisis.Schools close as plans made for key workers: In a historic move, schools and colleges across the nation will close until further notice, with GCSE and A Level exams cancelled. Children of key workers, including NHS staff, delivery drivers and supermarket staff - a full list is due later today - as well as vulnerable children will continue to attend otherwise-closed schools with a skeleton staff.Food supply chains are resilient: Environment Secretary George Eustice, reassured the Commons this morning that there is "significant resilience in our food supply chain" in the face of empty super-market shelves as people panic buy, and announced that "We've taken steps including setting aside delivery curfews, so that lorries can run around the clock, relaxing driver hours to ensure that deliveries can take place more frequently"Michel Barnier tests positive for Covid-19 as Boris indicates no change to legislation: trade The 69-year- old chief Brexit negotiator for the EU, Michel Barnier, confirmed on Twitter that he had tested positive for the virus, but was 'doing well'. Talks with the EU were cancelled this week, but the UK and EU exchanged draft legal texts on the future relationship yesterday.ECB launches €750b bond package: Christine Lagarde announced an emergency buyout of government and company debt across the eurozone - including Italy and Greece - saying that "there are no limits" to their commitment to the euro. The €750bn Pandemic Emergency Purchase Programme comes just six days after the ECB unveiled measures that failed to calm markets, piling pressure on it to do more to support Europe's economies. The programme will be temporary and end once the ECB "judges that the coronavirus Covid-19 crisis phase is over, but in any case not before the end of the year".Sterling hits lowest level in 35 years: Along with the Australian dollar and the Norwegian krone, sterling has suffered a huge fall against the US dollar, as the greenback attracts investors and traders looking for liquidity and a safe-haven. The Swiss franc and Japanese Yen have also been hit hard.On our site today: We have two contrasting articles today, the first of which comes from independent economist Julian Jessop, who looks at responses to the Covid-19 pandemic from economic policymakers around the world and suggests the British response is good. Full article here. Owner of Britain's leading salmon smokers H. Forman & Son, and former Brexit Party MEP for London Lance Forman, examines how to deal with business collapse and keep the economy on track suggesting that the UK government is getting things wrong You can read the full article here. For the latest news and developments throughout the day, please do follow @GlobalVision_UK on Twitter. Thanks for reading, and stay safe.

Some of our customers are farm shops and they have all said "yes" to our next beef due in ten days. People have to eat. Food security should be high on the agenda.

mm2 - it easy to get alarmist but I do see the biggest risk of hiccups in the food chain as people get sick. Ranging from the farms - packaging - delivery.
Now that would be scary.

Just to dispel the myth - From the NY times today. Two members of Congress tested positive and were in isolation on Thursday. While older people remain at gravest risk worldwide, a C.D.C. report found that 38 percent of those who required hospitalization in the U.S. were aged 20 to 54.Either the average youngster is a wimp or everyone's is at risk.

#207. Too early to say IMO. This week I tried to sell some Lloyds Prefs to rotate into higher yield equities. There were no takers; despite the market quotes they could not be sold. That is scary stuff and could happen to other asset classes. True value is what someone is prepared to pay.

I posted last week about properties in SE London in the early 1990's - they were basically unsaleable. So, too early to say.

Anyone else think this recession is going to be as catastrophic to the stock market as the 1929 crash?

will governments have to print more money / issue bonds, will inflation rise along with interest rates ?

will the housing market now start to contract while house prices fall?

oh and the virus , we are months away from a vaccine , another driving force for the direction of the markets atm,

hope that's cheered you all up?
