Cummings is a technician. His job is to help the PM make things happen, rather than to decide which things need to happen.

Take the police. Cummings could advise on how to bring about a massive cultural shift, so they no longer waste time on non-crime and pointless administrative duties and start doing the things we pay them for such as investigating burglaries again. But that won't happen unless Boris decides they need to happen.

He is a clear thinker who can put forward ideas cogently. In the blog I linked to earlier

the most interesting item is not the latest but the one before, the one on the reasons for voting Conservative.

Before the referendum, MPs promised to respect the result. They explicitly ruled out a second referendum — David Cameron, John Major, Tony Blair, Peter Mandelson, Nick Clegg, Corbyn, McDonnell, Starmer, Swinson, Gordon Brown, Heseltine, and even the official Remain campaign — they all said: ‘No second referendum, one vote, it will hold for a generation and Leave means leaving the Single Market and Customs Union and everyone should realise that because there’s no going back after the 23 June 2016.’

Many MPs behaved honestly. They tried to respect the result. They deserve respect.

But many MPs who promised to respect the result have done all they could to overturn it. The official Remain campaign’s central argument during the referendum was that ‘it’s all about leaving the Single Market and Customs Union’. They’ve spent the next four years saying ‘the referendum wasn’t about the Single Market and Customs Union’. Some like Dominic Grieve told voters at the last election that he would respect the referendum then did the opposite. MPs like him should be forced from public life in disgrace for their shameless dishonesty.

M2 I didn't miss your point. Its Whitehalls Job to implement government strategy. If Whithall wants to be objectionable and dig their heels they are acting outside of their remit & unprofessionally. It's become necessary to have advisors like Cummings who can manage Whithall just to get things done it's a effing disgrace & has fkall to do with being an elected representative.

AND Cummings hasn't just been drafted by Boris either he has been at the vanguard of politics since 2010.

Answer the question maxk: Are you saying the democratic process of selecting MEPs and a president is a facade?

Yes or no? It is a very simple question to answer.

I have the answer. We know your point of view has no rationale to back it up. Just emotion and deeply buried prejudice.

Jamie Wallis.

He was the director of several firms which have been the subject of hundreds of complaints to Bridgend trading standards.

Is this the quality of newly elected Tory MPs?

God help us.

In Cummings case as advisor to IDS & Gove he isnt/ wasnt simply advising his job was to get Whitehall to implement policy & by all accounts he was extremely effective despite much reluctance from the liberal Oxbridge humanities brigade. Who better to overhaul Whitehall than Cummings? He gets things done, a more important political mover & shaker than Thomas Cromwell.

Appointment of Ursula:

Article 17 of the Treaty on European Union, as amended by the Treaty of Lisbon, lays out the procedure for appointing the president and their team. The European Council votes by qualified majority for a nominee for the post of President, taking account of the latest European elections. This proposal is then put before Parliament which must approve or veto the appointment. If an absolute majority of MEPs support the nominee, they are elected. The president then, together with the Council, puts forward their team to the Parliament to be scrutinised. The Parliament normally insists that each one of them appear before the parliamentary committee that corresponds to their prospective portfolio for a public hearing. The Parliament then votes on the Commission as a whole; if approved, the European Council, acting by a qualified majority, appoints the president and their team to office.[28]

Appointment of Cummings:

Boris likes him

Come on, which process do you think is more democratic. Give the right answer or you will look really stupid.

An unelected advisor certainly does not have a case of changing the way this country is governed. There might be good reason to change the way the administration works. But the changes need to be led by people with defined responsibilities and accountability. That is certainly not an advisor job done in parallel with a few other jobs.

Also interesting that the same people always complained about the unelected officials in Brussels, which actually are elected and vetted.

I thought Brexit was supposed to bring back democracy?

If so, how come they have all capitulated so easily to Cummings autocratic rule?

Cummings wants this, Cummings wants that. Yes, Mr Cummings, whatever you say Mr Cummings!

LOL

Laughable, it truly is. I don't think most Brexiters know what they are talking about, what the real facts are, and what they truly want. A seriously muddled lot.

Nazanin Ratcliffe is a Zoroastrian Persian, who's ancestors were persecuted and banished from the country we now know as Iran, by the current dominant religion in the 8th century and fled to India. They are about the most civilized people you are ever likely to meet, much like the Armenians who were subjected to a holocaust, which Turkey denies. The artifacts and infrastructure of these early significant civilizations have been systematically destroyed by barbaric invaders even as late as 2015 in Syria. Nothing ever changes in the minds of those who accept the word of their supreme leaders who promise rewards in paradise, follow the heard and don't think for themselves!

Very encouraging to see newly emerging reasoning among the citizens of Tehran. Of all the Iranians I've met in London over the years of both cultures, say they hanker for pre-revolutionary days and almost always wore designer clothing or tee shirts/ baseball caps with NY, USA, Central Park or I love NY !

I hope the Ayatollahs in Tehran free her to show some leaninancy, in the light of their gravest of gaffs to regain some credibility, shunning pariah status brought on themselves.
