L&G opens door for huge US-style bonuses for UK asset managers

Update to pay policy includes room for ‘necessary flexibility’ to attract best talent to London-listed firm

"One of the largest UK pension and insurance firms has opened the door to backing US-style mega-bonuses for London listed companies despite fears that executive pay is fuelling inequality and encouraging “short-term risk taking”."

Apologies CWA1. Hit my post send button at about the same time as your advice.

That said, some general leeway on a weekend is never a bad thing as any sensible debate results in a widening of knowledge.

I will say no more on the subject.

adejuk: In principle I am in agreement with you. Talent wasted is unforgivable. I understand the same problem exists in Germany where many immigrants from Ukraine are highly skilled but unable to work to their full potential. I believe they are only allowed to take on low-skill jobs.

It should be appreciated though that the bulk of immigration is NOT via the small boats. It is via the official channels and as such those allowed in to the UK will have (I sincerely hope) the right to work in the very field they specialise in - that is why they applied to come here. Assuming they apply correctly and have a job offer in place that is with a legitimate company (not the uncle's next door neighbour) why is the hold-up for processing taking so long?

If the immigration request is refused then I would assume the person would not have travelled to this country at all by that stage.

If, however, the 'logjam' relates to asylum seekers who have arrived here without the correct permissions in place they should be sent back immediately to their place of residence. And there's the issue. Such assylum seekers have often destroyed their documentation to swerve that forced repatriation.

It is reasonable to assume therefore that the person, being unknown, cannot be assumed to be intelligent and skilled in some area. We only have their word for it. They may well be inventive and courageous - but they may not be whom they claim to be.

I've no sympathy with the Civil Service but granting assylum and the right to live/work in the UK when the person has entered illegally will encourage more to follow that same route rather than the official one. It effectively says:

Follow the immigration rules and apply wherein you run the possible risk of rejection

or

Arrive illegally and wait for the logjam to build sufficiently for a general amnesty to be applied and you'll succeed.

adejuk: yes there is no way to stop people crossing channel by small boats - its been going on for 10,000 years....

As you say, what needs to be done is a quicker turn around by civil service on ALLOWING or REJECTING claims. Job done.

Stopping boats is like King Canute trying to stop the sea.... its never going to happen.

Our governments have been "making it up" for almost thirty years. It's no wonder the FTSE's following suit.

Try POLR too for income, at current share price the yields just over 10% and its a quality company...more room for growth than LGEN imo
