And what about your capital / total return? Out of my 6 dividend paying holdings 3 are heading for a negative total return this year, 1 about break even and the remaining 2 look set to deliver a small positive return.

Nothing magical - just reinvestment of previous divis at low share prices and high yields, some repositioning of resources plus, of course, the usual annual divi increases. All compounding nicely. Not anticipating quite the same result from this year, but somewhere approaching 10% would be quite acceptable. Might even see some decent share price escalation too. Who knows?

I’m intrigued Woodhawk at the 30% increase from a year ago on dividend income! Obviously need some pointers here you seem to have done very well tips please.

Agreed Dope007, my divi income is up circa 30% from a year ago. 90% of mine already tax free as ISA'd. Reinvesting comparatively huge divis at historically low share prices is the way to go, imo.

Being presented with a gift horse isn't really a worry. UK mkt is currently presenting many gift horses due to its woeful multi year performance

Little bit of a worry that when the dividends land you could still pick these up this cheap!

The key issues here are energy debt and trust when you’re trying to work out possible future protections for rates! If you’re a producer of oil you will also want the higher price for your supposedly limited lifespan product and keep it there. Governments will want the higher prices so energy companies can invest in green alternatives and also they can benefit from the tax revenues.
The wild cards then come into play for instance the U.S deal with the Saudi government ends shortly with the latter not having to purchase using the dollar adding to pressure on the currency then rates. Interest rates then are governed just as much by external factors as internal ones.

Trev, I’m with you , interest rates are set to stay high throughout next year and inflation I hope something near 3%. A lot depends also on the consumer and if we have a slump here , then a recession can change things again. In this economic situation I don’t expect Stella share price in any investment/pension/finance focussed U.K. companies as we see today. But they are making lots of cash and high yields. An income investors paradise ! GLA

Cant see that happening if they are predicting base rate at 2% in H1 2025.Thats implying a drop from 5% end of year to 3.5 mid 2024.Figures lifted off the Boe front page.If that is the case, foot will be well and truely off the gas by the middle of next year.Fingers firmly crossed anyway.

Yump, you seem to be popping up all over ADVFN these days! Not much to do at the kennel at present I suppose.

It is a bit alarming if you hold L Gen. You a are a dog lover, and I did not have L Gen marked down as a canine! Perhaps I should run the rule over it more critically.

The Bank of England seem to think that interest rates will stay at around the 5% level for the whole of 2024 and my take on that is their correct. Energy will be the cause of sticky inflation for some time to come I believe and just where interest rates finally end up is anybody’s guess but they ain’t going below 4% now in my opinion regardless of growth or a recession and inflation targets well it doesn’t matter markets decide what they accept for risk as we’ve seen.

As an investor for dividend returns I’m quite happy the share price is stuck in the current range sub 230p. Great for continued top ups in this year and next. The share price doesn’t reflect the business performance but does reflect the impact of interest rates and inflation. I think this will remain until rates start to drop and inflation sub 3%. So well into 2024 IMO. It’s the same story for all insurance financials in FTSE today GLA and just keep adding if your in it for tax free ISA income

If anyone has access to the JPM note, I'd appreciate a pm. Genuinely puzzled as to their price recommendations across the sector - it's as though there's a new analyst suddenly authoring, or they've thrown out their models (which they should't have done, as the share price should be valued off Sol II Cap Gen, which is unchanged, not IFRS)...

marktime1231: Sometimes there is some amount of stock rotation - thus stocks that "should" rise on a certain day often rise a few days later...

Some of these big investment houses and banks have limited funds earmarked for GB and thus some stocks have to wait in a queue.

It does mean that small investors can sometimes make a killing ducking in and out.

Didn't JPM downgrade LGEN from 355p last month, citing an impact of IFRS17 on reported profits even though LGEN themselves have said it won't make much difference, plus macro economics putting a drag on LGIM and LGC property asset values?

What happened to JPMs enthusiasm for LGEN bossing the pension risk transfer market, a business which is continuing to boom?

What is the excuse for the downgrade this time, noting at 290p they obviously still rate LGEN a Buy with a 25-30% upside?

A bit miffed LGEN isn't enjoying a positive response to strong signals that we have reached the limit of interest rates.
