Johnson Matthey's anti-pollution technology comes to India 30th March 2007

Leading autocatalyst and precious metals producer Johnson Matthey is to team up with Indian authorities to help clean up the country's notoriously smog-choked streets. The move forms part of a campaign in conjunction with the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to cut down the country's levels of carbon dioxide emissions. The campaign will see Johnson Matthey's anti-pollution innovations Partial Continuously Regenerating Technology (PCRT) and its Continuously Regenerating Technology (CRT) employed in public transport and heavy-duty vehicles. Initially Johnson Matthey's products will used in 20 buses in Pune, with plans to extend the scheme to Mumbai at a later date, reports Cybernoon. Stephen L Johnson of the US Environmental Protection Agency said: "As we have seen in the US, these technologies, when coupled with ultra-low sulphur fuel, can reduce diesel emissions by over 90 per cent. "My hope is that a successful demonstration project here in Maharashtra will serve as a model for similar efforts throughout India," he added. Under the terms of the Kyoto agreement, developing countries such as India are not under legal obligation to cut carbon emissions. Sources:

Johnson Matthey is a blue-chip stock that offers exposure to the commodities boom, as well as significant interests in green energy technology, all in one package. If a smaller version of the business were to list on the Aim market, it would seek a much higher multiple.

Should the shares ever begin to look soft, it would not be surprising to see a private equity bidder emerge. The group's diverse range of businesses seems perfect for a break-up strategy. Keep buying says the Sunday Telegraph.

Just as in the mining industry where juniors do the exploration, fuel cells will turn out to be an industry where innovators develop concepts and devise techniques but expensive mass production of safe reliable fuel cells on time will be the sole provenance of large companies with deep pockets and deeper talent pools.

My personal choices for long-term investment would be Phelps Dodge [NYSE:PD] for copper and molybdenum, Johnson-Matthey [LSE:JMAT] for platinum and rhenium, Alcoa [NYSE:AA] and the new Russian Aluminium giant for aluminium, ExxonMobil [NYSE:XOM] for on-board hydrocarbon reforming and freestanding hydrogen fuel stations, DuPont [NYSE:DD] for plastic and Corning [NYSE:GLW] for ceramic, PEMs, Samsung for fuel cell mass production, and GM, Toyota, DCX, Hyundai and a Chinese car maker or two, as manufacturers of the hydrogen burning fuel cell powered vehicles.

For those of you that listen to my advice I foresee a rosy future for your adult grandchildren who are not yet born.

Johnson Matthey chemical firm expands in China - 23rd March 2006

Chemical company Alfa Aesar has announced details of a new facility in China which will help develop the firm's presence in the region.

Operating under the umbrella of parent firm Johnson Matthey, Alfa Aesar China will set up the plant in the Tianjin Economic Development Area (TEDA).

The centre is designed to bolster service in the region, delivering research chemicals from a catalogue of over 27,000 products to customers in the rapidly expanding market.

With further expansion already planned at the site, Johnson Matthey Research Chemicals director Barry Singelais hailed the move as a sign of things to come.

"The creation of Alfa Aesar China is a reflection of our optimism about the prospects for growth in China," he said.

"We already have a strong organization in the field and now we are supporting them with a dedicated facility, logistical support, expanded product range and a new catalogue."

Alfa Aesar China also boasts a central office in Beijing as well as four regional sales offices around the country.

China is the world's fastest growing economy, with its expanding population offering a huge consumer market for industry.
