24/10/2007 06:40 | Johnson Matthey Traders were talking of a possible £20 a share takeover, which would value the platinum specialist at more than £4bn. One name in the frame was said to be Praxair, a $26bn US gases and materials business. A Johnson spokesman refused to comment on "market rumours", but the company's shares ended 166p higher at £18.40, with nearly 8 million shares traded. The normal daily volume is closer to 2-3 million. Apart from the takeover talk, Johnson was buoyed by a record platinum price, pushed higher by supply worries. | sagem
16/10/2007 06:19 | SHARE PRICE VERY UNDERVALUED AND WERE DUE A RE RATING TO MINIMUM £18 PER SHARE. A bid would have to be minimum £20 per share and this is very likeley to happen soon :- //////////////////// Johnson Matthey moves higher on takeover rumou By Neil Hume and Robert Orr Published: October 16 2007 03:00 | Last updated: October 16 2007 03:00 Johnson Matthey was the standout feature in a FTSE 100 that closed sharply lower yesterday. Shares in the precious metals and pharmaceuticals group climbed 9.9 per cent to a record high of £18.40 in volume three times the daily average. The rise was triggered by rumours that Praxair, the US industrial gases company, was attempting to buy a stake as the prelude to a £20-a-share bid. Sector watchers were sceptical, on the grounds that there was little overlap between the two businesses and no clear synergies. Yet no one was prepared to rule out a bid for JM, which has a leading position in the fast-growing market for catalytic convertors. Traders pointed out that Dow Chemical had just shelved an investor meeting, fuelling speculation that it was working on a deal. In a e-mail sent to investors and analysts on Friday, Dow said it was making progress on "a number of exciting opportunities to deliver long-term value" to shareholders. | sagem

15/10/2007 16:11 | Still going, up 12% now Johnson Matthey Rises on Speculation Praxair May Make Offer By Poppy Trowbridge Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Johnson Matthey PLC, the maker of a third of all catalysts, posted its biggest gain in 5 years in London trading on speculation Praxair Inc, an U.S. producer of industrial gasses, is planning to make a takeover offer at 2,000 pence a share. Johnson Matthey rose as much as 7.1 percent to 1,793 pence, the steepest rise since Aug. 2002, and traded up 102 pence, or 6.1 percent, as of 3:24 p.m. ``Praxair buying Johnson Matthey would make for a good fit,'' said Jimmy Yates, a trader at CMC Markets in London. Speculation of a ``2,000 pence bid does not suggest a massive premium, although the stock is trading only one pound below its all-time high.'' Nigel Muir, spokesman for Praxair, says they don't comment on speculation. ``We don't comment on market rumours,'' Ian Godwin, director of corporate communications at Johnson Matthey, said by phone. | martincc

At 11.04 am, spot platinum was quoted up at 1,422 usd per ounce against 1,417 usd in late New York trades on Friday, having earlier set a new all-time record high of 1,425.00 usd per ounce. | sagem
