In answer to the number of VCSEL chip manufacturers, this Yole research note says they identified 50 worldwide.

• Needham raises its Lumentum (NASDAQ:LITE) price target by $10 to $90 (a 33% upside) and maintains a Strong Buy rating.
• Analyst Alex Henderson calls LITE the “strongest name” in optical that “trades at the lowest valuation.”
• Lumentum shares are up 0.3% premarket to $68.10.

Effectively anyone who needs 6” VCSEL’ will be engaging with IQE. As mentioned prior the barrier to entry high and even Finisar with $400m from Apple seem to be struggling to get involved / get a quality product out of their doors

Thanks for reminding us Maxwell. That's 12 of the 20 'in the bag' - Great stuff!!

A thumb-up from me.

Agree S-H, the '80:20 Rule' will apply so 20% will command 80% of the market, and your point re how many others are geared-up to RELIABLY deliver (let alone deliver) high quality VCSELs at scale is extremely valid. Not much 'analysis' given to that in recent days...

I think we can expect some cREO news in the coming weeks. 'Hot' (pardon the pun) on-the-heals of DFB.

Here are a pair of extracts from IQE announcements regarding the 20+ chip manufacturers:

From the results 29/9/2018:

A healthy wireless business and VCSEL engagements with more than 20 chip
companies for sensing, mobile, industrial and data communications
demonstrates the breadth and depth of customer engagements across a range
of technologies and applications and sets the scene for increasing
revenue diversity and growth through H2 2018 and beyond.

From the trading update 24/7/2018:

"Our highly successful H2 2017 ramp of 6 inch VCSEL production for a
major customer has established IQE as the go-to materials solution
provider for this technology. It is widely recognised that with more
than 25 years' experience of working with VCSELs and a clear, visible,
commitment to world leading manufacturing capacity on two continents, we
are and will remain the premier preferred manufacturer of these
materials. H1 2018 has seen a very significant increase in the number
and extent of our engagements with VCSEL chip customers. We are now
engaged with over 20 VCSEL chip manufacturers in Asia, North America and
Europe on qualifications for mobile, sensing, automotive and datacom
applications. We are already fully qualified and in mass production
with six of these companies and in final qualification stages with an
additional six more.

It's "20 major" companies so my question would be how many majors there are?

hornblower, that's not very logical thinking. There aren't that many chip companies in the world that would be producing high end VCSEL products. And you don't know what percentage of the market these companies control so those 20 could be 80% of the market in which case it's fine.

I assume that there are hundreds if not thousands of potential customers out there although many will be tiny.
If they have 20 out of 25 I would be worried for future growth. 20 out of 200 is far preferable.

ennyweeny- Good questions raised there. How about applying pareto's Law and skim the top 20 out of the 200 or even 100. They have not signed anything as of now in my understanding It said they are in talks to 20 OEM. I wish something was signed or some MOA is in place or probably they have and NDAs clause is applied. Even if its not top 20 in the industry even getting the small to medium chip makers you are still getting expouser and considerable control in the market.moreover, your topline on P&L is getting larger.

Hi folks, it has been a few months since I last posted anything so here goes with a question,

IQE management have boasted that they have signed up 20 major customers.
My question; how many potential customers are there out there?
If the total is say 25 potential customers then 20 actual customers is excellent news. However if there is 200 potential customers then 20 contracts is pathetic.
Yes, I could try and search the internet and source my own answers but I want to ascertain if anybody on here already knows the answer, as in, is it already easily identifiable common knowledge or more secretive.

Thanks in advance for any new debate.

DITTO - mhassan.

2H nailed-on with risk to upside. Confident Interim statement will have put the willies up shorts.

But, IQE can't afford to miss their client/supply chain obligations - they need to carefully 'feather' the production choke etc Therefore delivery remains a risk, albeit a manageable one.

With the current Guidance I am positive we are suppling Apple through the supply Chain for their new upcoming models. If we are supplying lumentum then go and check their c.20% share price rise in the 5 weeks. I am waiting for Bigger customers on board.
