24/12/2013 19:37 | I have a question and cannot find an answer. Any genuine investors able to assist? According to Roskill, (see above link) iodine prices reached for the sky following the Japanese earthquake in 2011. Before that the price per kilo was 32 USD. "......Iodine prices were largely stable around US$32/kg throughout 2010 and the beginning of 2011. In March of that year, prices went from US$33/kg to US$97.5/kg on the spot market because of the Japanese earthquake and later some seasonal production drop off in South America. A further factor was Cosayach of Chile idling a significant proportion of its capacity because of lack of water following the closure of illegal wells....." The Chilean producers have been producing iodine well before the 2011 spike in the price and were in general making profits. Making decent profits with a spot price of 32 USD...... If they were able to run the industry profitably at 32USD only a couple of years ago why are they so frightened of a spot price of $45 and $50 now? What has changed to cause such fear? | steveolds
24/12/2013 19:26 | Here's wishing us all a merry Christmas, but most of all a prosperous New Year! For what it's worth all my shareholding remains intact, if somewhat battered! | gadolinium
24/12/2013 19:19 | I thought i ought to pop on and wish everyone a Merry Christmas before I open the sweet sherry! Reading some of the posts on here it looks like some have been hitting the sherry all week. Anyway I am looking forward to a successful 2014 as IOF put the delays behind them. The Tech is proven, says it all really. Pleased I am going forward with all my shares and pleased to have benefited from the posts of Super, Rock, Che7win, Matrix Trader and Square1 to name BUT a FEW excellent posters throughout the year. Keep up the good work Guys and Gals. | ansana
24/12/2013 17:11 | Good points Rockstar. I look all the time, and probably against the grain think that gold related stocks will be good to keep an eye in the coming 12 months. As for any resource sector it's about the demand for the commodity combined with major producer costs, including the longevity of the market. Lithium is seen as having big growth near term, longer term graphite may feature as a big product. However those commodities face the same long term issue, so could be subject to bubbles that burst, that problem is that both products are abundant in commercial terms. So they both imo, are subject to companies product chasing, should demand and prices rise, a plethora of businesses, looking to get into the game, will drive it into an over-supply situation. That's not to say certain companies early on in that sector won't be attractive, but many will surely be a 'bubble ready to burst' companies at some point. Boring old iodine has a niche sector of producers simply because commercial resources are scarce, and it's not easy to produce iodine. However the tech world is finding more and more uses, for this unique mineral that can't be copied synthetically. Chile had it all it's own way, and within that iodine producer members section, they created their own problems in a personal production battle to grab the limelight and profits on the price rises. It is in fact like the US world series of baseball where only US teams can win. Chile thought they had it all to themselves, but it's amazing what one hears about the lengths the competition will go to, to get a look an IOF iodine plant. That would explain the US flag on io3. 'It must work' say the onlookers, they are building more of the darn things. For Chile that is very bad news, and they will be acutely aware of it. The dust hasn't settled yet re recent events-: SQM mines closed and looking like 2000mt plus taken offline, that action v a planned expansion. Sirocco suspended operations. Cososayach... Expansion plans withdrawn and the application to do so cancelled, and what case are they facing in the supreme court ? Algorta, figures don't add up, expansion plans expensive, but not to feature until late 2014/2015, with the 'subject to market conditions' tag. In other words the iodine plans for Chile have not only seen the big ideas abandoned, they have actually done the reverse and closing down operations not expanding. All in an effort to protect the price. All of that will kick in over the next year. The old government predicted 2014 would see worsening situations re water, power and costs. The new one is going to tax the miners more. So if IOF can deliver it just increases the pain for Chile. Note I don't mention SCM Bullmine, they have plans, but those ideas were created on the high prices. IMO we will soon be talking about them closing, then forgetting them, as they won't be back. Best wishes to all | superg1
24/12/2013 16:37 | Merry Christmas to all LTHs. Expecting share price turn around so topped up a few more in the SIPP yesterday. Not been tempted to sell any real shares thus far despite recent share price performance. | battery

24/12/2013 14:02 | I too am a long term holder of nearly two years. Compared to this time a year ago the technology is now validated and so going forward the biggest risk to shareholders is the management of cashflow in scaling up the businesss. From a personal perspective I would prefer the company to scale up marginally slower and retain a "contingency buffer" within the balance sheet rather than going for broke. This seems to be the way the management have decided to play it. There is a graveyard of companies that have gone bust mismanaging cashflow. I understand the new FD is excellent. It amuses me sometime to see the "fast buck merchants" come and go on this board to expect things to happen almost overnight. I think this is partly due to todays internet driven society where people have become used to instant gratification. Also the fact the people seem to sit at a screen 8 hours a day stock watching. It won't make it happen any faster! It was only a few years ago we had to wait for the daily newspaper to be delivered to check the prices. Iodine production this quarter this quarter will be 5 times that of the Q1- 17.5t to around 100mt. Iodine production in the Q2 of next year will be double that of Q4. Iofina are the lowest cost producer and having an existing Chemical Derivatives business helps ensure they have a market for their product. I would expect the share price volatility to reduce once the first 6 plants are operational and a long term production rate for each plant becomes clear. The first half of 2014 should be about careful cash management and this includes making the all important first sales into the bulk market. I still am hunting for a company that is likely to grow at a faster rate over the next few years without the risk of investing in boom/bust exploration stocks. More than ever I remain convinced those that are patient will be richly rewarded. It is all going in the right direction with the odd bump along the way which happens in all businesses. Merry Christmas to all IOF shareholders. | rock star

24/12/2013 12:18 | Like some I have been in IOF since it was 21p, so I am thankfully still in profit. It has not been an easy few weeks, as my massive gains have slipped away & I am sorry for those, including a a few members of my family, who bought more recently. Things will turn good again. Thanks to SG and all the positive posters and those who have expressed GENUINE concerns. A hopeful, peaceful, and above all loving Christmas to all. | pleco
24/12/2013 12:13 | Big thanks to SG, Noli, dig and others whose research has been invaluable. As for the price drop, well i have never seen a share on aim that wasn't extremely volatile. The price drop has no bearing on the roll out which is slower than expected but highly lucrative going forward. The company is moving out of its toddler stage as a producer and beginning to stand on its feet and make progress. It can only get better from here. The share price will reflect it in time. Good luck all and Happy Christmas :-) | bogg1e |
