In Afrikaans, @ is called "aapstert," [monkey's tail].

Afrikaans is closely related to Dutch, where @ is called, among other things, "apestaart" meaning, of course, monkey's tail.

The original name was "een a met een slinger" [an a with a swing ], but was soon more popularly called either "apestaart" or the diminutive "apestaartje" [(little) monkey's tail] or "slingeraap" [swinging monkey"]

I however, think it looks more like a monkeys butt hole.

It isn't an ampersand. The ampersand is the '&' sign.

'@' doesn't yet have a word in English.

A decent find from this month that explains in detail the impact of seawater use and those rules coming in.

EG they say it is 4 to 10 times the cost of using fresh water, and for a 3000 metre uplift $5 to $7 per cubic metre.

SQM quote the one mine area water rights as 570 litres per second. Using 250 litre per second as a guide v seawater and $5 it's $4500 per hour extra or over $100k per day, $36 mill per year, for less than half of the quoted 570 litres.

Sqm quote raw material costs (fuel power etc) as 20% of costs of sales making it around $300m.

That example is about one mine area, so based on the figures re seawater and quoted in that link, it would seem the 150 rule would have a significant impact on their costs. on the face of it, it looks like a $50m to $100m costs rise at least, changing the cost of sales figure significantly.

The first stage of the rule is hoped to be set for 2016.

Chilean environmental regulations have become increasingly stringent in recent years, both with respect to the approval of new projects and in connection with the implementation and development of projects already approved, and we believe that this trend is likely to continue. Given public interest in environmental enforcement matters, these regulations or their application may also be subject to political considerations that are beyond our control.

In connection with our current investments at the Salar de Atacama and Nueva Victoria, the success of these investments is dependent on the behavior of the ecosystem variables being monitored over time. If the behavior of these
variables in future years does not meet environmental requirements, our operation may be subject to important restrictions by the authorities on the maximum allowable amounts of brine and water extraction.

They have mentioned other laws and issues that are tightening, but fail to mention the 150 litre per second rule that looks set to become law.

In the area mentioned the water rights cover 570 litres per second, so clearly that will be hit and need seawater if the law is passed.

How they treat their employees (recent article)

In the mining sector, companies like SQM complaint, the day of the earthquake did not create the conditions for its workers being moved from site to their homes, and also the day after the fact forced to raise workers to meet their shifts , even moving their staff not authorized to transport workers also practice by Minera Cosayach roads.

All this was reported to the White Minister during his recent visit to Iquique, noting that all reported cases have in common the lack of judgment, but deepening that this lack is allowed in the case of decrees disaster areas due to that this legislation leaves everything to the discretion of the employer and also empowers, not paying wages, hours extend, terminate the employment relationship citing art. 159 fortuitous event or force majeure, leaving the incomplete defenseless workers. It is for this situation to change and asking for an end to poverty picture in which today are all workers of Tarapaca.

Then this recent declaration on risks by SQM

The Chilean labor code (Código del Trabajo or ―Labor Code‖) has recently established new procedures for labor matters which include oral trials conducted by specialized judges. The majority of these oral trials have found in favor of the employee. These new procedures could increase the probability of
adverse judgments in labor lawsuits which could have a material adverse effect on our business, financial condition and results of operations.

Apologies I got the gross margins the wrong way around

2011 $34 per kg gross margin 58%

2013 $50 per kg gross margin 56%.

47% iodine price rise. 2% drop on the margins.

Another example of the price squeeze for them

Industrial chemicals.

2011 $745 per mt, 40% gross margin

2013 $877........... 28% gross margin.

Topped up again this morning with half the proceeds of my HOIL holding. HOIL is being taken out cheaply at a 35% premium.
I hope that does not happen here - but it could do.
