Some good news from S.A. yesterday.

And today

Anglo-South African bank Investec expects the opportunity in leveraged buy-out (LBO) to grow significantly in India as the private equity (PE) market deepens and PE funds look to deploy record sums of capital they have raised.

Yes it certainly won’t help but I feel even more sorry for the people of South Africa living through the current turmoil.

nice quote i think

“Plan your trade and trade your plan! As simple as it sounds, draw a chart with entry/exit and trade it. If you don't have a plan, you don't have rules, and if you don't have rules, you won't win.”

nemesis6,
I do have a share account with HL too but only used it a few times when a float comes along - rare nowadays . I had not heard about EL Torro .
Incidentally , there is NO stamp duty in OZ since 1996 and not in USA either I think - just in backward pommyland ( smile ) . What a pity I can not blame it on brexit ( wink )

RCTurner ,
you seem to have done well using your methods and , as you rightly say , there is more than one way of making money . Just one point though . We have been in a long term bull market for many years and especially in USA . If that had not been the case and perhaps markets had moved sideways or even had a downward bias over the years , you might have had different results and me too to be fair . I only occasionally go short because markets remain bullish with odd pullback and much prefer buying on a big intra day dip
to shorting on an intra day rally where seems to be overbought on the day . Safer to go long until such time as charts show a short and maybe medium term downtrend if it ever happens - it might do one day but markets even recovered rapidly after covid dip and especially the major US indices . Good luck .

arja, I have double digit returns on average over many years, I keep detailed records so that I can track returns and where investments have gone right and gone wrong. I tend to follow a value approach so I am not too worried about market movements. In my current portfolio I have something like 18 stocks and investment trusts with an average return of over 15% (which includes one bad error of a stock that has halved in value) plus dividends. As long as you make money that is the main thing, but very many traders do not understand the difference between signal and noise and do not realise that profits made (often over long periods of time) are just random effects put down to skill.

also , can trade FX and indices which have tight spreads going long or short and quite often it is easier to make quick profits doing that many times a day . Open a demo account and test your skills before using real money

you only know that from headers on certain sites and odd to use the word average. I like to think I am not the average trader as use a technical approach and do rather well overall . Investing is more dangerous in one respect if someone hangs on in hope as share price falls and reluctant to cut one's loss . using Cfds and focusing , usually doing OAAT , it is much easier to keep good discipline

arja, I do know they are a good way to lose money yes. The average retail "trader" in such products loses money every year and soon gives up on them.

Hello yes, i opened an el toro account but im not awash with cash outside the sipp....so im kind of stuck with it unless i change providers (with HL) but they are ok and the more i trade the cheaper the costs are but it is my only retirement income so i dont want to treat it like a platform (much as id like to ;-])

Stamp duty in the UK is 0.5% on transactions. You have to be a terrible investor for that to be a factor in your return.

it is why I only trade using CFDs and sometimes hold for a short while but financing charges are a pain as greedy CFD providers charge a rate of interest of about 5% p.a.
You mentions Stamp duty . It was one of the reasons I turned to CFDs some years ago as NO stamp duty . Most trades I do would turn a nice profit into a loss or a very tiny profit if stamp duty came into picture . In OZ stamp duty on share purchases on the ASXC was abolished in 1995. I have lived in OZ for many years and may return next year and love trading shares there of course . I think that there is no SD in USA either but I could be wrong - backward England !

It really should do...i got out of rr just broke even but lumbered with Vod (not too worried) SGC IAG and BP (again not to worried) with a sipp though i should be putting more in funds though. Keep turning a blind eye to the 11 quid and wretched stamp duty everytime you buy.
