27/2/2002 16:55 | Can somebody tell me which thread is currently active on the discussion of trading stratgies. Thanks. | raqifluz
27/2/2002 16:39 | we've all had the fun side, now how about the business side: - would you be strictly a day trader, cleaning the deck before market close and starting afresh the next day? or would you let you become a position trader or swing trader. what are the advatages and disadvantages. - what type of shares to trade? - would you trade uk shares only or the usa, and perhaps european shares too and why? - would you trade the physical shares or opt for trading derivatives, and why. - what about going short as well as long. - hardware and software, level 2 and technical analysis and books. one can write a book on every item raised above. i am throwing these in to stimulate some discussion. there must be a wealth of ideas and knowledge among our very resourseful fbb contributors! | melfaraj

26/2/2002 17:10 | well it has a snow-ball effect, if you pardon the pun! the more you do it the fitter you get and the more capable you become at doing it. i am not sure though abouyt the effect spain would have on one's perfermance, the hot weather and all those lovely girls. reading your posting above it appear to has a distinctively positive effect. | melfaraj
26/2/2002 16:05 | Melfaraj, it was probly me who said that I would only trade for a couple of hours a day, I also started the thread. My ideas are maybe a little closer to reality now but I do understand what you are saying. Part of the whole idea though is to get outdoors away from a desk for the majority of the day and enjoy life, instead of being stuck behind a desk all day and then trading in the evenings too! I miss the Dow open because of work so that would be the time of day that I would like to trade but the rest of the day would be leisure time or spent doing something more constuctive than spinning on a desk chair. I am currently trying to sort myself out with some activities to get some more stable money in rather than relying on any money made by trading too. There's things in the pipeline there. Things are looking good. Cheers Bb | bensta
26/2/2002 15:15 | for those who think day trading is fun, in particular if bored with your current job, please think twice. trading can be fun, especially if you come on top. but day trading in particular, as opposed to long term investment, is often not fun. traders can remain glued to their monitors all day during which they are expected to maintain a cool head and objective judgement and in isolation from the rest of the world. and if this is coupled to losses then life would seem very uneventful. there are ways of lessening the humdrum of day trading. one example is what a collueague above suggested that he would only trade a certain number of hours a day. good idea, but you need to select your hours of trading carefully. these would be the market opening hours and closing hours when most trading by the professionals occur. the same idea applies to trading seasons of the year. the summer months are often dead months. i can go on and on | melfaraj

22/1/2002 00:40 | I want to start this thread to collect together some ideas and info on the aspects of trying to make a living out of trading. Or at least being able to live for a few months/yrs and getting out of the rat race and enjoying some time abroad. I don't want to discuss trading strategies as we already have an excellent thread for that but would like to hear experiences from people who have done this on things such as internet access from abroad, overheads/cost of living, tax implications, good places/countries to trade from and all the pitfalls that go with any of these things. The nightmares are as useful as the good experiences to keep reality in check! There have already been some ideas and experiences on the day traders thread but I would appreciate if we can transfer those onto hear so that they don't get lost and can be easily referenced. Cheers for your help Ben | bensta
