I would have got into trading in the 80's with my knowledge now and be a Billionaire living on a huge yacht like this one below. I would move my Yacht so every morning I would have a different horizon and sunset everyday.

Long live hindsight :P

does anyone know that some of the live prices on mo-neyam are false and have been a minute or more behind LSE prices...this cost me £900 last week in triggered stop losses... one price on LSE was 90/91 while m-oneyam was showing 94/95 ...i complained to an ADVFN competitor but they didn't seem bothered..it happened on 2 different stocks on seperate days so isn't just a one off glitch.Just wondered if i could take them to trading standards...obviously not getting live prices that i pay for...i advise anyone to think seriously about tracking their monitors or you could end up well out of pocket. Then again i just hope advfn's monitor prices aren't from the same feed or you could be getting the same problem

3 stocks it happened to last week was GWP,VLR and RDG...GWP was the worst offender and must have made spread bet companies thousands in triggered stop losses

its all about money and tv rights -- i agree justin - but the pots big enough for all to share -- bit like boxing wbc - and the other one - i forget now - but having two heavy weight champions at the same time - creates another bout and 20 million quid :o)-- still it adds to enjoyment at the end of the day

The Brewer

I don’t think that last one is updating itself.

Anyway I’ve done a bit of routing around and I found these, that I think will fit the bill.

I want to start this thread to collect together some ideas and info on the aspects of trying to make a living out of trading. Or at least being able to live for a few months/yrs and getting out of the rat race and enjoying some time abroad.

I don't want to discuss trading strategies as we already have an excellent thread for that but would like to hear experiences from people who have done this on things such as internet access from abroad, overheads/cost of living, tax implications, good places/countries to trade from and all the pitfalls that go with any of these things.

The nightmares are as useful as the good experiences to keep reality in check!

There have already been some ideas and experiences on the day traders thread but I would appreciate if we can transfer those onto hear so that they don't get lost and can be easily referenced.

Cheers for your help

Ben

I have made a living (reasonable) from trading for the last three years.

From my previous career I had travelled quite extensively and had picked up a couple of languges (badly).

I now live in Spain where the cost of living is probably half of the UK. It helps being able to speak the language but is not essential.

Certain parts of the Spanish bureacracy are frustrating but generally as long as you buy/rent a property in or near a town, telephone access can easily be arranged, usually with ADSL. Without a job you will not be entitled to use the Spanish health system, but you may want to keep a low profile anyway as the Spanish rates of tax are higher than the UK and start at lower thresholds.

Internet access without ADSL is about £1 per hour during the day.

Hi Mab,

Let's put it like this… the trading is a means to support a certain lifestyle that would be something completely different from what I do now. Its not a meant toget rich by in any hurry.

That said, I would certainly not be able to trade successfully enough to live in the part of the country that I do now and would not want to as I would get no 'life benefit' or extend my cultural experiences.

I do believe that it is possible to make enough to live on and enjoy a bit of life in some places abroad. andyj sounds like he had the perfect example on the DTT of day trading in Croatia on £150 of overheads per month.

I work now and I'm frustrated that I cannot trade the opening of the Dow as I have been successful doing that when I have had the opportunity. I am bored of my work and life in general so it is a lot about doing something different than making lots of money.

I have plenty of time before I decide if I will do this or not and that gives me more time to get more trading experience. I have family who live in Spain and Turkey who have fixed line internet access so I can come to arrangements there for starters to test the lifestyle in sunnier climes.

If I sell my house I would have plenty of funds so the pressure to make money would not be great for quite a while. All that doesn't worry me, I'm just more concerned and interested in tips and pitfalls of the whole thing.

Cheers for now

Ben
