Well, the nearest I’ve been to the Capes, is standing on the shores of SA, watching the wales perform.

Rayrac - they could have routed the AM round the Horn instead. At least that way it would have been with the prevailing winds and seas as opposed to being straight into them at the Cake. Mind you, it might have taken a little longer.... And the small matter of the Southern Ocean to contend with. Ugh!

Hi Rayrac yes and no! The issue with both Capes is the bad weather that comes from the Southern ocean. Worse at the Horn but can be very bad at the Cape of Good Hope.

My knowledge is based on a very pleasant evening drinking a fine bottle of carmenere, good fish and knowledgeable company, not personal experience.

Chilean? Thats the wrong cape!

Ship Ahoy anyway. Got the Bay of Biscay to traverse yet...that can be a bit rough!

The cape of good hope is apparently not a very nice place to sail around in an underpowered top heavy boat, which I assume the AZ is without the crude oil as ballast. Much better the sheltered waters of the Red Sea and Med, as I understand.

As to the cape horn, I know a former Chilean naval pilot who used to assist ships in trouble there and that’s the last place you would voluntarily take the AZ, it’s really wild water!

Not surprising they were trying to avoid the suez, it costs nearly .05m usd to go thru there, robbery!

I think you mean 0.5m? But even $500K doesn't sound excessive to me. It's hardly a cheap bit of infrastructure, and once you factor in fuel, and crew/ship time costs of going the long way it starts looking cheap. The AM probably uses at least 1-2 T fuel per hour, when moving, that's around $20k per day fuel cost alone. You need to add crew costs, and a factor for the extra time the ship is off station WoS.

It would take the AM about 25 days extra to go round the Cape, so fuel costs alone would be $0.5m, or more. Plus crew costs etc. Less pirates, but potentially tougher sea conditions.

So has HD says, prices are set appropriate for the market!

re Suez Canal costs , I’d got it at around $360,000 or so .
That includes tugs and onboard personnel.

So if we’d went via Africa ( forgot which Cape ) how much longer would it take and fuel costs ( Crew surely is priced in ) .

Mind you either way now it’s looking like WoS just prior to bad weather ie January : February .
