10.10am: Citi sees limited UK impact from SVBAre the falls in bank share prices a buying opportunity? Broker Citi suggests it could be. It sees very limited read-across from the issues facing Silicon Valley Bank in the US to the European Banking sector. The bank noted European banks have less deposit concentration, are still seeing relatively healthy deposit flows, operate with large liquidity portfolios, and remain well capitalized."We also see less risk to capital in the event that balance sheet positions in negative carry do have to be crystallized."Citi remains overweight European banks with its top-picks BBVA, Lloyds, Intesa.JP Morgan said: "Whilst we do not believe there is a banking crisis in the making and the SVB situation is somewhat unique, we do expect increased investor scrutiny on 1) bond portfolios as a percentage of deposits; 2) mark-to-market of Available For Sale (AFS) as well as Held To Maturity (HTM) books; and 3) deposit outflows and the pace of."

Waiting for EOD to buy more HSBC Super M. I like HK tech also as maybe no interest rate rise this month from the Fed due to meltdown.

You mean when Lloyds was forced by the UK Government to buy HBOS in order to save HBOS from collapse.

It looks like a good opportunistic deal, but I was a shareholder of Lloyds when it bought HBOS......

I hope HSBC remember how to acquire failing banks as it was very adept 20yrs ago. This has all the feel of the Midland Bank acquisition of Crocker. No due diligence, inept management, no eyes on the ball. They need to go in hard, flush out the management who caused it to go bust and get some discipline in place. I'm not sure there's anyone left who remembers how to do that!

So on the face of it we've acquired a profitable company with an ok balance sheet.
The customers should be a lot happier and we've got access to new business.
And all for £1.

HSBC and other bigger banks, should do well out of this situation, as folks and businesses will be put off from investing and borrowing from small banks, so potentially more business for the likes of HSBC..
