As i understand it, they sell new shares at a premium to nav and then use cash to buy undervalued assets.

I went to add on Friday and held off. I can see it under 300p. I've been wrong before, but China is struggling with new cases now too.

I can see further downside coming, the Delta variant is out of control.

My biggest holding at the moment - hopefully pretty safe and can't get 7% interest in the bank!

I hope when the world returns to normal these will climb too.

Could not resist having a nibble here again.

In a world gone mad these look pretty solid and with a raised 7% dividend will sit well in my income portfolio.Don't expect much capital growth.(I own S&P tracker for that)

Also like the fact that these seem less affected by market volatility in the event of a correction/crash although obviously they would still be affected.

Tim3 - I agree. I first bought in to HFEL in May 2017. To date I'm sitting on a capital loss of -6% but have received dividends to the value of 15% of my cost. So a total return of 9%.

Compare that to my holding in Fundsmith Equity fund (Acc version). I first bought into Fundsmith in April 2018. I've set up a regular automated quarterly withdrawal payment with them (just like a quarterly dividend). To date my capital is up 44% and I've received payments equivalent to 10% of my cost. So, a total return of 54%.

No contest!

zacYes it's strange despite strong yielding stocks feeling like the right thing to do capital gain has always proved more profitable for me.

Unfortunately this is becoming a real drag on my portfolio. Whilst I like the income the overall return is now making me question the viability of continuing to hold here.

Look at the total returns I've (we've) received over recent times (ie income and capital growth)

3m 1.44%, 6m 5.85%, 1yr 6.54%, 3yrs 8.54%. I realise we've been through a difficult trading period but 8.5% total return over 3 years is unacceptable as far as I'm concerned.

As a long term holder I'll give it to the year end and then make my decision. I need to see some capital return, not much just some, in order for me to continue to hold.

Any rise in dividend is always welcome. You certainly don't hold this share for capital appreciation.

Quarterly dividend announced, up to 5.9p from 5.8p. Not a huge increase, but the trust does yield 7.2%.

Tempted to buy back in here might wait a bit though maybe get a small pullback ex d as its above its average premium to nav.

Seems to be one of the few areas of value in this market and prospects look decent.

Thanks for the heads up.

I'm a fairly long term investor here. First purchased in May 2017. Current average buy price is £3.47.

I'm not generally a huge fan of dividend paying holdings as from experience my equity growth funds far outperform anything that pays a dividend.

However, I like diversification in my portfolio. It's comforting to know that although my capital is currently 2.7% down I've received dividends to date equivalent to 13.4% of my overall investment cost. So, total return (which is my key measure) of +10.7%.

It's comforting to know that any additional investment at today's price will give me a 7% yield and if I don't decide to add (which I will) then my current holding is yielding about 6.7% pa. The one thing I will say about dividend paying holdings is the longer you hold them the better they look! Good luck.

Agree, better than anything offered from any savings account 'albeit there is risk with Divi's' .. my second biggest holding.. happy to take the 7%+ on my lot for now - sure they'll also increase in capital too over time.

Will look to add on any market weakness.

My avg. price is ~326p
