22/11/2002 00:06 | I'm surprised there's not more trading on SVI today - their investment in Permira (which just realised a tidy profit on its 71pc of Homebase sale to GUS) should add approx 57p net asset value per share. Not bad for a two year deal! | balmoral
22/11/2002 00:05 | well guys I might be too bullish... Market has a habit of turning on Thursday lunchtime Many a time my midday espresso cost me more than it should...ie the mornings gains and 3I sems to be accumulating lots of sell orders in level II half my position got taken out at 562...will leave the rest running But I do see 4200 being broken decisively within the next week | foale
22/11/2002 00:03 | e-mail off GNI I am afraid that our line into the internet has gone down again. Our supplier is working to fix it as soon as possible. In the meantime we have switched over to our backup line which is supposed to have been upgraded this morning to be as big as the main line. However, this has not yet happened so our internet connection is smaller. It is going a bit up and down I'm afraid as it keeps flipping from one line to another. Please bear with us. Lots of IT people are working hard to fix it. | rb5

21/11/2002 20:31 | I don't post much these days due to work, but after a very successful September, I had a bad October. I always struggle when the markets start to turn. November started ok, but then had a bad two or three days (was on a course and should have closed all positions). I then reduced the number of stocks I was trading. On a good run at the moment - 9 winning days out of the last 10 but the losing day I lost a fair amount on CW, but well up overall during my good spell. Been trading US stocks during the past week and very pleased with the outcome. On holiday from tomorrow and unlike previous holidays I have closed all positions (apart from iss's etc). The market will always be there so no point in taking risks! | timeliner
21/11/2002 20:14 | Seymour - great book. Personally struggling, but we now appear to have broken upwards so at least I've got a trend - I like trends!! | big al 39
21/11/2002 20:12 | ST - yes, much bigger money is to be made rolling trades over, but there are also big losses to be made as well if it turns overnight. It's particularly difficult when the indices are trading in tihght ranges as recently. However, the last few days' rally seems to be looking upwards. At least we appear to have a direction now. | big al 39
21/11/2002 20:09 | Evening all Can't believe the US! Hope those "mistakes" aren't too costly for those that are owning up. I missed 10 pts in 10 mins this morning on BPB - just sat and stared at it! Nothing else today, have been too busy at work, but I think I need to scale my workload down so I can play the market as well! Was up 12% at end of last month, nearly back to that now :-) (Took one big hit at the beginning of this month so dropped all my position sizes, only one loss since, so confidence restored, well up on points). Just bought "Trading in the Zone" by Mark Douglas so only a few pages in, but can thoroughly recommend it - axdpc, if you haven't read it I think you should - great for us beginners. Only positions at present are long, in PEP, ISA, SIPP. Hope to soon be back to breakeven! | seymour clearly
21/11/2002 20:04 | Just been lurking and wondering if taking rolling bets is the best way currently. The massive volatility of a few week seems to have died down. Been looking at some of the day trading positions I've taken and compared them to running a rolling position, frightening! The amount of money I would have made taking a position and rolling it over compared to purely day trading is staggering. If you take the UKX and Lloyd's this week as an example, how many of us (me included) have just scalped points here and there, when there was much more for the taking. ST | supertourer
21/11/2002 20:03 | Strange old world. Got a copy of Shares mag this evening. What's their front cover - short selling. Bit bloody late aren't they? That was the whole summer I thought. | big al 39
21/11/2002 19:59 | Out of Dow short - what the hell! | big al 39
21/11/2002 19:52 | axd lol I just checked in out of habit. Too true I`m learning!! I`ve been working on my charts this evening and I`m goggle-eyed now. SS has some good indicators including p&f. Makes it easy(ish) to see trends and support and resistance. Made a few notes. Its quite strange how I fell into looking at a few stocks after my first manic moments of trying to find stocks to trade. I`m trying hard to trade with the trend. Doing fine so far. Long on bnzl after a poor entry, not realising the effect of being ex-divi a couple of days ago. Short on tsco and rex. Taken profits on wpp and exl and a smaller rolling short on emg. I`ve still got to work on my stop losses. I think I`ll start rolling bets in the future and take out SLs that I can trail during the day. Like Tony said the overnight ones are a gamble | snip
21/11/2002 19:39 | axdpc - keep in the game while you learn. DO NOT lose it all!! razorgirl - 4200 must be gone at this rate, 4700 possible with a pause at 4400-4450, but a figure like 5k is a long way off yet IMO. Small short Dow 8811 for the hell of it. Stop 8850. | big al 39
21/11/2002 18:52 | If the US carries on like this, looks like the FTSE could break 4200 tomorrow, which would confirm the upside break out from the descending triangle and what now looks like a much smaller ascending triangle: If it breaks, target 4500 with a bit of resistance at 4300, and roast bear time. There will be plenty of people looking to short a failure. | razorgirl
21/11/2002 18:36 | My bet is on Bush not taking chances of ruining Christmas for Wall St. So no war before Xmas is my guess. | axdpc
21/11/2002 18:32 | US running away with itself, smashing through resistance. If it closes at these levels, that Christmas bull run may come sooner than expected (providing Bush keeps his trigger finger in it's holster). | forwood
21/11/2002 18:15 | Hotai, Big Al. My bite my lips so hard when AVZ reach 455 that it almost bleed. Decided I had to resist the temptation to double up on this one. It is not about profit or loss on this call, I needed to practice resisting temptation to over-trade and doubling up for no good reason/tactic. If I can resist once, it would be easier next time, I hope. I never regreted the original short entry as I did follow some 'tactic' planning, and the exit of half stake, was, again, planned. So the loss is within calculations (but still not nice!). Hotai, I do agree, that a 10% gain should retrace a bit sometime, even if AVZ continues to go up. forwood, tony Sorry to hear about your losses. I am just hanging on with my finger nails. But I can constantly learning about trading and probably, more importantly, my trading emotions. p.s. my nails are getting tougher too :-) foale, Go, go, go! I may not have the guts to folow you all the way, but it is good to see someone beating the market :-))) snip, If you are reading this. I hope you are learning from all our expensive mistakes. It's no point paying tuition twice :-) | axdpc |
